I 100% agree with you! There are so many people claiming to be make up artists after watching a few tutorials on KZbin and it’s not fair when there’s people like myself who actually went to college to get your cert/diploma in order to be able to do make up. I think there is some law where if you’re not qualified you can get done for providing a service to someone e.g make up/hair if you don’t have the qualification

I could not agree more, I started out “self taught” but couldn’t get a job on counter without a qualification (best thing I ever did). I got my ITEC qualification, got a job on counter in Dublin and learned so so much, got sent to London training and got so many more opportunities. I did Makeup on Irish celebrities at the IFTAs and spent two years working on counter. I moved home to Kerry and started working freelance here which I love and just held my first Masterclass (amazing feeling!) but there’s so many “Makeup Artists” charging way under what I charge and I get so many comments on my pricing etc... I charge based on my qualification, training and experience. There needs to be something put in place so that not everyone can call themselves a “Makeup Artist”. Couldn’t agree more with you! Xxx

I definitely agree! There’s so many people out there these days I think there needs to be a distinction between those who have done makeup for years and have qualifications and those who haven’t....

I agree with you about the makeup artists , everyone calls themselves MUAs whereas someone actually spent time, money and dedication to get a certificate/ diploma to be qualified !

Tara I agree but at the same time if someone is still in secondary school and they want to charge €15 they should be allowed, not everyone can afford to pay €40 to get their makeup done

Ellen Rose I see your point, I just agree that something should be brought in to distinguish between professional makeup artists and say people who are good at makeup. I’m not saying everyone has to charge €40

I agree completely about the Make Up Artistry. I have been in the industry for 6 years now, busting my ass working on a counter full time, while working freelance to to build my skill. It irritates me when I see my followers and clients even paying £80 for a day lesson and sticking MUA on their Instagram. I get that everyone has to start somewhere but c’monnn - Groupon Make Up Lessons don’t make you a Make Up Artist. What does is working hard, practicing and building a clientele - takes time and dedication! Loved this video gal ❤️

I understand keilidh a lot of my friends have told me to make a makeup account and I always say like I want to wait till I get really good cause my end goal is to become a proper artist not to get loads followers of whatever ❤️

Keilidh, I think the most true and utterly pertinent piece of advice you’ve just given young people wanting to start out in the industry here, is that they NEED TO MAKE SURE THAT IT IS SOMETHING THEY ARE DOING FOR THE LOVE OF THEIR WORK/ART/CREATIVITY, & not them focusing on getting more likes & thumbs ups or growing their followers on whatever social media platform they’re trying to build. When you have that spark of passion in your work, that truth of the love of your work, it shines through showing yourself in the best light possible, which automatically will bring that interest to you. But it’s interest that is there for love, and not superficiality.

Preach I completely agree ! I am a trainee and I have it clearly stated in my insta bio and everywhere else ! I actually charge 15 - 20 and the tutors in vanityx also agree it should be at least 25 for a trainee! But I totally agree x

Thank you thank you thank you for addressing the point about something being done with people just doing a lesson and saying they’re a makeup artist. It’s not a joke this is our career and something we’ve worked for. I think it definitely needs to be accredited. It’s not being bitchy as you said it affects our business. Loved this video. Everything you said is spot on! Definitely think everything happens for a reason. I always go into a new year and think of goals. It doesn't matter if it's at the beginning of the year or at the end. Just as long as you're working towards something positive. Also, who cares about how many followers, if you're doing it because you love makeup, than who cares! Can't wait to see you on the 28th to get some badly needed motivation ❤️

I always wanted to open my own bakery but family etc always told me there’s not much money in it, I worked my a** off and I have my own from home business, hoping to open my bakery in the next 5 years after college! Love this video! So motivational 🙌🏼totally agree with the trainee situation. I’ve been doing makeup for just over a year now after completing a 6 week intense course (hairdressing is my main trade but I’ve always had a passion for make up). I still consider myself a trainee as such as I’m just figuring out my own make up style and how to perfect the basics! I’ve everyone tortured practicing on their faces 😂 but I think it’s totally necessary to help me build my own confidence as well!

Also couldn’t agree more with bringing in something to differentiate inexperienced and experienced makeup artists! I had to lower my prices to compete with “makeup artists” that don’t know what they are doing and don’t even sanitise their makeup!

I agree with Keilidh that something has to be brought in I personally teach myself and I continue to improve and while I am good at makeup that doesn’t make me a professional makeup artist I do girls makeup for cheap for discos and stuff but I never go around saying I’m a professional and I do think that’s extremely important to tell your clients

i agree something needs to be brought in, but i am a self taught makeup artist and have practised and practised for the past 3 years to learn on myself and others! i have worked really hard and i am based in a salon. It would really be unfair if i was told i wasnt able to do makeup anymore because i dont have a piece of paper! if you have insurance and take cleanliness very seriously then i do not see the issue, i would not charge £15 for makeup though! if someone has talent why cant they be successful?! :)

What a great content of the video Keilidh 👌🏼 There should be a Proffessional Makeup Artist Association, where you acquire your PRO status by either proof of experience or an exam ,similar to Driving licence ! I agree 100% in regards to qualifications, every girl and her mother these days are “MUAs”. A few of my friends have told me to start doing makeup on the side but there’s no way I would because even if I’m “good” enough to do other people’s makeup, I’m not in college for makeup. It’s farcical that any makeup enthusiast can call themselves an MUA, in no other industry does that happen 🙄

i agree about bringing in standards and levels and proper accreditation for makeup artists! i’m actually shocked when i see people changing anything under £30 for full makeup i have no idea how they can afford to charge so little!! however, i modelled for an MUA a few months ago, she’s a full time beauty blogger/youtuber/mua and trained at a london beauty school team years ago and has heaps of qualifications.. but she used mascara right from the tube on me, i didn’t see her sanitise ANYTHING, taking the eyeliner off made my lids red raw because she’d put it on so thick and she asked for the lashes back because she wanted to use them on someone else!! i didn’t think at the time but looking back i’m horrified

I am currently working on affording a make up course with Sharleen Collins but till I do my course I couldn’t imagine doing other peoples make up except people who ask me that I’m really close two cause the fact I’m not qualified makes me nervous cause if the hate or it looks awful 😬 Your video helped so much thank u x

In the states they have licenses and it's different depending on your level of experience and what's your background. You have to take a test for it but if your that serious about doing makeup then it should be no problem. The industry in Ireland needs to grow and have standards. Things will only change if counters/brands and the entertainment industry enforce them.
