The hardened layer is from moisture. Happens when you do swatches with your fingers and when there is a lot of humidity in the air. You just need to gently exfoliate the top layer off and it will work like new.

On the ones that have hardened, could it be because the oil from your fingers have gotten on the product? I've noticed that happen with any product that I use with my fingers. Just wondering. Love these clean out videos!

+flourishxo to get rid of the "hard pan" Just run some sticky tape over where there's that hard film on the compact, and it should remove it, might take a couple goes. I do it all the time. I find that if I swatch something a lot it'll get the hard pan, or it could just be from my facial oils on my brush. It sucks, but it's totally fine because you can fix it :)
