i'm in my mid twenties and i was SHOCKED when my friends (of the same age) thought the tik tok beauty influencers didn't use filters... like they just really thought their skin was perfect. watching youtube and being in the beauty space for so long, i grew up knowing about this issue... but lots of people like my friends who just dabble in makeup videos don't realize that. i could not imagine what my self-esteem and confidence would be like if i thought all these people had perfect skin except me! :'(

I’m around your age and it shocks me too. Especially that bold glamour filter trending on TikTok because it makes everyone look extremely facetuned, yet so many people are saying they wished they looked that way. What they’re not realizing is that no one looks that way.

Def agree, I’m also 28 (as of today!) and couldn’t imagine growing up with social media as it is today especially with the amount of filters and face/body altering apps out there. I can see how easy it is to fall into the trap of “this makes me look prettier” “I wish I looked like this” etc. so I make a point to never actually save any photo that I’ve used a filter on such as snap chat and won’t even go down the rabbit hole of editing my face and body in photos. Those things can be so tempting yet so damaging.

Before Social Media it was models retouched in magazines. Perfection has always been a lie and we have always been sold products with it. There’s nothing new or worse about filters except that everyone has access to them.

Also the very young getting plastic surgery, Botox or fillers like it’s a right of passage. How are they going to feel when they are actually more mature like 50+. If a filter changes how you look completely I’m against it especially when you are selling products. It’s lying. We are all here (I think) because we want to feel or look more beautiful or we like the ritual of self care but it goes too far for some. There needs more emphasis on cultivating the mind body and soul. I’m not seeing it in the collective on social media anyway. I could go on but I’ll spare you. Lol

The filters are really worrying. I also think they may have somewhat contributed to the change in the beauty community (less emphasis on makeup tutorials than before) because who needs a makeup tutorial when you can fake your entire face with a filter? I also feel worried about how it seems like we’re being encouraged to prioritise how we present online, and to believe that who we are in real life is somehow less important.

Love this look on you! And so glad you talked about this topic. It was already hard enough for us girls to be happy with the way we look when we only had fashion magazines to compare ourselves too… just not reality, and so much harder now when everyone seems to look “perfect.” Thanks for this refreshing take on just enhancing the beauty you already have :)

I turned 38 last month. (Full disclosure, I’ve been getting conservative amounts of Botox and filler for several years now so I wouldn’t blame anyone for thinking it’s hypocritical of me to have this opinion/outlook) I’ve never filtered a photo of myself because I’m afraid I’d eventually start to resent the way I look irl. Same reason I’ve never gotten hair extensions or fake nails. Like I’m scared to even try it out of curiosity bc I feel like it could be a slippery slope of nitpicking myself in the mirror, wanting to tweak this or that once I’ve seen this “idealized” version of myself that doesn’t align with reality. But why then am I okay with getting injections to slightly alter my face, when I’m turned off by the idea of filters that some might argue serve the same purpose…I don’t know! It’s an interesting topic and you’ve def given me something to think about 🖤

I totally agree! Natural beauty always wins out. The filtered look was way too intense and fake. The real Jamie is the pretty Jamie, even when you're not wearing a full glam look. It's important for everyone to focus on being their authentic selves. The real you is the best you.

The filters scare me, I didn't grow up with parents doing any kind of botox or face or body altering procedures (until later, she got a breast reduction and then my dad had some skin removed from his jowls). I grew up with friends' parents who totally did but I was always told I was beautiful just as I was. About 1.5 year ago, I was shocked at how many people my age (I'm 28) were regularly doing botox, lip fillers, BBLs, and getting other body altering procedures. The two girls Im talking about did it to improve their self esteem (both had boob reductions and boob enhancements-so no judgment!) I don't get the hype over the big juicy lips and the snatched face. I love makeup and wear it nearly every day but I dont want to change the shape of my face. But the filters... can be fun? but damaging to girls and people young enough to be convinced this is what women do and need to be considered beautiful out in this harsh world and unfortunately, by men. Only recently have I gotten a little self conscious over my forehead lines.

Hi Jamie! This is why I adore you, also Julia. Both keeping it real. I’m closer to your mom‘s age, I always have to preface things with that - but I’ve tried the glam filter believe it or not on TikTok, and I was horrified. Like I had Just gotten out of an overzealous session of Botox. Actually I don’t know what it was like, just a little bit strange. (My lips didn’t move with me!) Anyway I’m very glad it wasn’t in existence when I was in my teens or even my 20s. I think your idea of enhancing your own features, still bringing the glam, is ideal. You look beautiful. ❤

Literally wanted to scream through my monitor when I saw you twisted the milk contour stick up first before taking the cap off - i literally expected the outcome 🤣😅 Anyway i think the size of the stick is perfect for contouring :) Really loved the makeup look Jamie! Personally I dont like TikTok anyway, I just dont get any good vibes from that platform, compared to youtube where I feel more connection to the influencer, or Instagram where I can try to consume consciously the content from creators that positively influence me 💜

I get what you are saying. Growing up, as a bigger girl, all of the media I consumed was filled with super skinny girls and women. That was the norm and the beauty standard, but now there are so many more bodies being shown and I can (and do) make the choice to almost exclusively see bodies that look like mine or are similar in size to mine. I realized recently how much of an impact that's had on me when I went to a clothing website that had skinny models as the default and I felt shocked by it for the first time. I'm not used to seeing that and it was uncomfortable, where as it would have seemed normal to me not too long ago. It matters what we are viewing.

Gosh I never use the filters. Every time I try, it changes my face and I look not like myself…just feels so fake. I have a really big community and I don’t feel comfortable posting something that’s not my real face. I think also as a makeup artist, it’s so important to me to not alter any images because people are looking to it as real work.

I totally prefer your actual face! The filter makes you look a bit odd and messes up face proportions. It’s a beautiful makeup look Jamie! I did not grow up with filters or even social media as I am about your moms age. I agree with you and think it’s pretty damaging to young peoples self esteem and really is out of touch with reality. Even people my age forget that what they see o social media is very scripted, filtered, edited in every way, even though they do it themselves. They forget that others do as well.

I’m in my late 30’s and I will say that I used filters all of 2021. In 2022 I decided to use them less if at all and if I did use them I only used the ones that would not alter facial features. So far for the last I would say 8 month I refuse to use filters on any of my face photos. I feel like I look silly trying to use one. I see other people and I’m like that’s not you but do you. I genuinely prefer my no filter face now and I am SO glad I’m not in it like I was. It was a true mind F and I am sad for my daughters. Luckily they know they don’t need them but I also knew that and somehow got sucked in to only using them for a while. It’s a dangerous concept. Fun yes but dangerous for mental health in the long run. Just my opinion. ❤

I do agree but at the same time, using makeup is like applying a filter to yourself too, evened out skin, less visible pores, bigger eyes, etc, etc...of course altering actually your features/body shape is another level but when you think about it, not that much. I am one who having some skin issues for long time, I could not dare for the life of me to go outside without any makeup, even just to buy bread at the corner of my house. I am learning to accept my real human, less perfect look without feeling that I am dying if i leave the house not covering everything. But it has taken me many years. What worries really is that the younger generations literally breath constantly all this shitty fashion of covering and changing visually who you are or look like somebody else to be more "acceptable" and ok. If older generations already struggle with image issues, I don´t want to imagine the younger ones 😔

I have a problem with the filters, but I understand the draw to them. I liken them to the heavy photo-shopping of models in magazines when magazines were relevant. I mean, look at any old Glamour magazines and you'll see fully shellacked models. Tan, poreless, luminous, no cellulite, etc. I'm sure it made young women feel inadequate then. So I guess this is just the modern-day version of an industry creation that ultimately inspires women on one level but also makes them feel like they can never live up to that ideal. Ugh!
