I think you should applaud MAPPA as much as you can, Nick. Because this show is their passion project and even though the animators were still overworked, as is literally the case in every single animé studio, they did everything in-house and poured their heart and soul into every single second of this animé. They weren't forced to do this show because it's literally their passion project. Also, MAPPA is truly a legendary studio for bringing so many veterans of the animé industry to do a single show. This is probably one of the most stacked animé we've gotten since OPM!

Denji really is a deep and complex character even just in these early episodes he went from 1 owner to another only difference is now his basic dreams of a basic life have finally been reached also fyi this episode cut a scene with a muscle devil that actually shows him willing to throw away this new life he only had for a couple hours to escape with a little girl and what he thought was her pet devil (mirroring him and Pochita) but it instead just took over her body but showed how easily he could be manipulated, something that may or may not be a main theme of the series

10:30 yeah, he really is, and it's all because like... all he wants is for someone to be kind to him. just... someone love this boy and tell him he's doing a good job please? for as weirdly sexual as his interests seem, it's clear that that's just sort of like... the only way he knows how to frame his desire. all he wants are real bonds with another person... like, real affection. the kind that comes from someone who actually likes you. in a much more innocent sense, he shared an emotional bond with Pochita since he was a child... sort of like they were siblings. Pochita isn't actually a dog, he's a devil. and he has a level of intelligence that makes their relationship a lot more reciprocal than just having a pet. Denji is missing that now, and all his pursuits of real human affection feel like he's trying to fill that hole. and I mean, even when he had Pochita, he still dreamed of having someone to love romantically. but back then, the way he described it was pretty innocent. eating food, playing video games, cuddling... the most basic of comforts, and still more than he thought he could ever ask for. but in the absence of even Pochita... the one creature in all the world who he thought could be on his side... he becomes incredibly manipulable, and it's heart wrenching. literally Denji makes me cry, because he feels like the human embodiment of suffering under capitalism, and the alienation of keeping a foothold in life while trying to navigate poverty. all it takes is one kind gesture, or nice word, or good meal, or hot bath, or tasty thing to spread on his toast, and it completely rocks his world. and yet, we haven't really seen him break down and cry yet... like he's just that used to it. it doesn't even frustrate him anymore. it doesn't even register. you just kind of want to teach him all the things that aren't normal, and that he doesn't have to put up with. the plot leads to a lot of really cool shit, but I still wish he didn't have to get exploited, or feel threatened, or be in danger. he's been through so much already. pure wish fulfillment is imagining how to do a better job of taking care of him.

I really really love how you genuinely get that Denji is a multifaceted and complex character, even if he's also juvenile. This series in general has so many incredible layers and powerful themes it's insane. Like I never saw this coming from a show called chainsaw man. Like it's about a guy with chainsaws for everything. It doesn't need to be deep, it just needs to be fun. But it's doing both in perfect balance. You already have a really strong grasp on what the series is really about and what's going on.
