I made a 1gallon batch in January, racked it twice. It came out nice and clear. I like your mixing tool, I think I'll make one and move up to a 5 gallon batch.

I made a gallon of mead with wildflower honey, a cup of green tea(cooled until barely warm), and champagne yeast. It came out pretty hot at 12% abv. Had to let it sit for a year to smooth out the flavor. Drank like a dry white wine. Even if I didn't get drunk I would have the worst hangovers! Instead of straining out the leese I just leave the last half inch of mead at the bottom of the fermentation bucket, mostly because of laziness. My next batch I'm gonna try to make a little sweeter.
@spiritoptimus4302
@spiritoptimus4302 Жыл бұрын
Can you use the last half inch of mead for a new batch or should you throw it out and start from scratch?
@tylerhebert8237
@tylerhebert8237 Жыл бұрын
@@spiritoptimus4302 The yeast is all dead so its no good for the next batch. Some people run the mead through a strainer to keep the leese out of the bottle, others just stop bottling when the leese gets too close to the hose.

What you strain out is called a yeast cakes. You can actually take it and use it again in the next batch of mead in place of using new yeast packs.

After years of makin stuff, do the diligence on sugar content, dont overload it, yeast dies if its overloaded with sugar. All the cleaning and doo dahs is horseshit. The best shiners made great shine in wooden barrels and no disinfectant. I make red wine from welches grape juice from the supermarket, , add same amount of sugar that the juice has in it, that will pan out at 10%abv, a bit more might hit 15%.........Use wine yeast... beer yeast pegs out at about 10% , no airlocks , use gallon water jugs and leave the cap a bit slack, let the CO2 escape. Keep warm. cold kills the yeast. When the bubblin stops, put in a cold place for a day,or more, let the shit settle, syphon off and let settle more, if you want clear wine add finings, but its really not necessary. Humans have made wine forever without chemicals, If I have a few glasses too many of home made wine I dont suffer, store wine is terrible. Hope this helps. Gallon water containers are cool, free and they wash out clean, use hot water. Dont use acidic fruit juice like pineapple, they suck, stick to red fruits like berries and plums, Honey for mead is great, but dont over sugar it, a lot of honey is fake, its corn syrup. Apple juice is great, makes a wine like the best grape whites. The romans did just fine without all the hype, drink your mistakes.......

Still wasting yeast I see. There is absolutely no reason to be using more than 1 pack for a 5 gallon batch especially the way things are going right now with supplies of everything running out.
