When completed in the summer of 2013, our 13-foot replica of the U.S.S. Kitty Hawk will be the largest model we've ever constructed. Like our smaller CV-63 model (see earlier videos), it will be able to launch R/C aircraft via a catapult system. Unlike that smaller model, it will also be able to recover those aircraft.
Stay tuned for Part Two of "Building the Behemoth," followed by much more video featuring this monster of a remote-control boat!

Joe, thanks for watching the video. We had a 4" square x 1/4' thick plexi color sample lying around. The diagonal cut, about 1-3/4" from one edge (top) to 2-1/4" (bottom) gave us 2 identical pieces which we drilled and ground to shape, as you mentioned.

Steve, thank you for commenting. We anticipated some overheating problems with affordable speed controls so for now it's fwd., stop, and rev. The considerable mass of the carrier dictates smooth speed transitions without using esc's.

Badcat, scripting, making and editing videos is very time consuming; we won't be making a general 'how-to-build model boat' video. Rather, we will cover a specific build that we feel is interesting to viewers. Thanks for watching!

Lots of info out there on scale model building, Luke. The propeller shaft passes through a tube which is glued to the hull. The tube greatly reduces water ingress because of the close fit.

OUTSTANDING! Having seen the real thing, I can attest this project is quite an undertaking and the documentary really nails it. Part II will undoubtedly wrap it up nicely...can't wait to see it. Lots of attention has gone into this boat and it shows. No doubt the performance will be equally great and the team will catch it all on film. Exceptional!! Jim, a.k.a. VideoOne

Arved, we considered all types of propulsion options, but internal and external combustion engines come with drawbacks such as volatile fuel, providing enough combustion air and machinery space ventilation, noise levels, and exhaust heat and residue. Electric made the most sense as the many auxiliary functions can be run off one or more big batteries, which also help to fill the ballasting requirement.

I have enjoyed watching these videos. I lived and worked on the Enterprise. I have dreamed of building one of these ,but its pointless unless you can fly on and off. You guys have seemed to come close of what I have watched so far. BRAVO ! I used to lay in my rack and do the math on scaling down a ship model, so you can fly RC aircraft on and off. 30yrs ago I came up with a scale of 21ft length x about 9ft width . lol

Not just any mahogany, either. This mahogany is from the planet of Malchior 7, where the trees are three hundred feet tall and breath fire! It is from these trees that this carrier was forged two thousand years ago, using ancient blood rituals of the Malchior people. Not only does it make this carrier NIGH INDESTRUCTIBLE, but it can bend the fabric of the universe itself! Also, it's a very fine material. Very expensive. ...Mahogany.

Always wanted to build a RC carrier. Excellent job! Curious what your using for speed controllers? I have a Mr. Darby with high torque Marx GT500 motors with planetary gear transmissions and keep burning up my Vantec VAN713H controller. My other controller is a MCD SC330FET. I'm looking to replace both controllers. I'm turning twin 3.75" four blade props. FYI, I was stationed on the real USS Kitty Hawk in the late 70's, attached to VA52 with A6E aircraft. Interesting to see her name in RC use.

The clearances between the shafts o. d. and stuffing tubes i.d. are minimal, and they are only submerged maybe 2 - 3 inches, so the pressure so close to the surface is very little. A light coating of oil also helps keep the seawater out.
