Keeping the pieces as one while doing the carving is an interesting idea that had not occurred to me. Thank you for that tip.

Really really enjoyed this video. Thanks for sharing...:) I wood work myself and have been drawn more and more to using hand tools instead of machinery. This has inspired me to challenge myself to do the same and build a box using only hand tools.

I like the way you say that a lot of the specialty tools that you use (e.g. Router plane) aren't necessary so that people without those tools won't get disheartened.

+Michael and Jessica Marrinan Thank you! Honestly, haven't watched this one for a good while so I'm not even sure what I have said in it anymore! What you mention is true though. All the joinery in this can be done with a sharp chisel, a fine tooth back saw and a half decent (but sharp) hand plane! Also, even simple joinery like these rebates make any project so much more rewarding to build! I hope you make one for yourself!

Really nice project. I too have always admired Peter's work. I want to try this as well. But with all of the tools I have, I don't have any carving tools!

Thank you @Drone Girl ! I'd love to see some photos of his boxes if you are able to post them anywhere. Your channel re-sparked my desire for a drone! I was in the market for one before I left the US for NZ. I didn't go through with purchasing one yet since I wasn't sure of the laws over here regarding their frequencies. I've been here long enough so hopefully soon I, and my wife, will be flying one!

Around hinges a pencil will give a tighter fit if you leave the line when you do the mortise. I enjoy your videos.

Hi +Hobi Kayu, That is cheesecloth that's I wrapped around my hand. The Flexcut carving chisels I have are made of a strong but rather thin steel that digs into my hand. I'm slowly trying to callus it up my palm but until then, cheesecloth it is. I'll try to show a closer view of the v-chisel soon so there is a visual to this as well.

I really like that box! quick question, what process do you use to sketch projects? it looks like you draw a triangle to help? I'm terrible at sketching but I want to get better. do you have any tips?
@CleanPhilWanted8 жыл бұрын
Thank you +Jotato! So, I was just outside filming/talking my way through one of the drawings for you and my camera shut off... I just ran out of memory. Tomorrow I'll try again. So I apologize about the delay in answering you. Still, you should check out SunnySiuOnline. The one, two and three point perspective playlists that he has are the best ones on the subject I've run across. Those playlist contain short tutorials on 'measuring points'. Those are where all those lines are coming from.

Did you pin the rabbet joints? Or did you use nails? Great piece btw!
@CleanPhilWanted8 жыл бұрын
Well, trick answer to this, I did nail them but I glued them first. I'm pretty sure the originals of this were just nailed or pinned. I'm not really willing to spend 20 bucks on 8 rose head nails and I haven't found cut nails over here yet. ( I think most sane folks would think this way). So, I used cheap galvanized nails that were soft enough for me to texture the heads of with a ball-peen hammer. Even though I did nail them with those textured nails, they are more for aesthetic purposes then strength since I PVA glued the joints first. Being the grain is all the same direction on the sides I wasn't concerned with splitting from the glued joint.

A much better use for that box is to keep my cannabis. It would look perfect in the smoking room !
