Making a 1930's BLOUSE from a PDF SEWING PATTERN for the first time (Revival Designed 0237)

I use a PDF sewing pattern for the very first time. I made the 1930's blouse in a rayon fabric, and I used Revival Designed's PDF blouse pattern 0237. However, I share with you my tips and tricks to make this 1930's blouse as well as some mistakes along the way. To get the sleeves to puff at the top, cut a cresent moon the size of the puff you want of thin nonfusible interfacing and sew it inside on the sleeve side of the seam. Works every time. I mean hey... you used rayon? :)

From an old lady who has been sewing for more years than I want to say. When sewing a new pattern, make a mockup out of muslin. On material that moves, stay stitch between the sewing line and the cut line on single layer of fabric where you need the curve to not stretch out of shape. Even if the pattern does not include inner facing, add it to the neck and shirt facing where you have buttons and buttonholes. You're a good sport for allowing all of us viewers to see you learning the art of sewing.

May I ask what machine you use? I had a newer Singer sewing machine but it would vibrate and the stitch tensions would shift. Pfaff are good, but soooo expensive!

​@gkennedy2998 My late Aunt advised me to get an old sewing machine at a yard sale with all metal moving parts. It's the plastic moving parts on cheaper newer machines that can mess with the tension. Also used machines require being serviced first. Better yet, get a refurbished machine from a sewing machine repair shop. Sometimes you might find a combination vacuum and sewing machine repair shop. They will hopefully have already serviced the machine before selling it.

I have to admit, you got me laughing over the whole PDF fiasco - we take ours to a blueprinter and they run them off on one piece of paper for a few bucks. Not sure if this works for all patterns, but it did for the Negroni shirt. As far as sewing buttonholes, you are a brave woman! I like my old Singer buttonholers - all flavors - along with my computerized ones. And I use a handcrank if need be to slow things down in the buttonhole arena. Finally, I would have, as you thought about later, added some kind of interfacing to the front of the blouse - very light - just to give it a bit more structure. I don't know about you, but I zig zag every piece of fabric in a pattern before I sew it. For the rayon, it would have helped stabilize the stretch. Also, the fraying!! Ugh. Anyway, your blouse turned out really nice. Keep 'em comin'!

I did some straight stitching along my edges to help with fraying. In my old machine I only have one cam for zig zag and it is a strange one. I never thought about taking it to a printer but since I have one at home I will just be more judicious with what I print out. 😂😂

"On the grain" just means "so the threads are running straight this direction." Whether that is warp or weft, in commercial fabric without stretch, makes no difference. I started sewing professionally in 1968. I specialized in costuming and historical tailoring. I am retired now, and still sewing. Long ago lost track of how many garments I have made. I also took up spinning and weaving. Grain works alike long ways or crossways.

Sounds like you learned a ton on this project. So many firsts for you too. It’s a Darling print and lovely fabric. I’m stunned they didn’t have you put some kind of interfacing to reenforce the button placket. I can’t imagine your frustration! The blouse turned out pretty well considering all the problems you ran into. I find your problem solving inspired! And your unplanned darts turned out great!! Give yourself some grace! No one could have the hand sticking around the neck and stuff not show! Unless it’s a thick wool or fluffy fabric, blind hand stitching shows on thin fabrics! No matter how fine your stitches are. If you pay attention, even Bernadette’s stitches show!! Well done Stephanie!

Hello Stephanie, fast forward it is January 2024. As I watch you 😊wrassle with your blouse I am attempting alterations on a 35 foot vacuum cleaner hose sleeve. Why ? You ask? Because it is 3 years post pandemic and you can only be certain that only garbage comes out of China. In this case the hose sleeve is an inch not wide enough and is strangling the central vac hose. I am making up the solution as I go along, so watching your video is both an inspiration and helping with procrastination! I love your videos and eagerly await for them to pop up.! I think your blouse turned out pretty good, all said and done. Not sure how to solve the a bit saggy instead of billowy sleeve problem….there must be a way! Meanwhile, back to my repair that is taking far too long….😊❤😂

Hazah for matching face masked before hemming! I made a face mask for my apron dress after I got in a fight with said apron dress from bad gathering blunders and put it in time out (ufo pile) for 2 months. I cheat with buttons-I use hooks and bars (or hooks and eyes on blouses) for the actual closures and make a fake button holes that I don’t cut open then see a button onto it. I use a vintage sewing machine for 99% of the sewing then have a junky modern one I do the button holes on after about an hour of fiddling to get tension etc right with a sample. I hate the mosquitoes, they devour me so I have to wear long sleeves and knee high socks even in summer.

I sure applaud your dexterity for cutting out on the floor. I have not printed a PDF pattern yet also and rarely iron before cutting BUT rayon is another animal or anything that walks on it's own. Love the pattern but there is something missing when you don't handle pattern tissue paper ( I have sewed a PDF - just one I didn't print myself) There are so many delicious details on vintage - well worth it when you pass the tearing of the hair and blue smoke. Rayon is a pain, you absolutely need to press before you lay it out. Some spray sizing might have helped also. And interface anything with buttonholes. I love your sense of humor. I haven't sewn in decades (1980s), I can really only make the simplest apparel for myself as I lack skills to make adjustments. I sewed many children's clothes...including satin Christmas dresses for my nieces. My mother picked out the material and I literally told her ANY material but satin. Much cursing ensued. The dresses were gorgeous though.

Yes, ALWAYS press the fabric before cutting. and a rotary cutter would be a lot easier to cut... otherwise excellent video,and beautiful blouse

I have to say I just recently printed my first pdf and have ywt to tape it together as I figured it is going to take at least two rolls of tape. im working on a pdf pattern of a jacket from 1924 while watching and the amount of steps that weren't mentioned is crazy ! I even was halfway through the muslin before I realized I didn't cut enough layers of cloth. Luckily I have a couture sewing book to reference,now I think vintage patterns cant be made without a reference lol, There's always some little thing you'll miss.

I always heavily starch and then iron rayon challis before cutting it out. And then apply spray starch as need during sewing.

Looks fab! I love the rayon sleeves. Stiffer sleeves would look more forties. Also, hand stitching is an expensive finish and should be detectable.

a handy tip. Do not cut out the pieces until you tape all the papers together before cutting anything out. It is easier that way

agreed. I recently printed out a pdf pattern and things didn't quite line up as expected. I wouldn't have been able to compensate/correct if I'd trimmed the pages before assembling. It can make for a giant paper quilt situation, but definitely the way to go.

There is a technique of construction that has a stiff inner ruffle at the top of the puff sleeves that maintains the poof.

You did a cracking job of the blouse! I love the black contrast buttons and the belt just makes it. The fabric is perfect. For a blouse that is self measured and fitted it’s actually really a very good fit. Do you then go over the raw edges with an overlocker? Great video😊

That rayon looks a nightmare to work with! My immediate reaction to the finished blouse (well, after, "How darling!" ) is that it needs more ease. It's that extra soft, floppy fabric...I don't know why, but fabric like that needs a LOT of ease, often more than provided in the pattern. It looks adorable on you, but I fear the seams will pull at the bust. I hope not!!! --Teresa

I've sewed 100's of costumes, using poly cotton, satin , charmus and even pan velvet (that was a nightmare), so when the wife wanted a blouse made from rayon - no problem. Famous last words !!!!!! I could not sew a straight seam to save my life, the rayon was just so slippery. I finally found the trick of flat lining the rayon with tissue paper, which is torn off after the seam is sewn. Success.

I haaaaaaate using tailors chalk, it’s so clumsy. I recommend Bic Frixion pens for doing darts. They’re super precise and they iron off with heat so they’ll disappear after you press your darts. You just need to test them on your fabric before you use them because there are a few fabrics they don’t totally come out of.

Curious what prices are like in USA, here in Aus a 200m Gutterman all purpose is $aud5 100m, $10 For 250m and $15 for 500m. Rasant which is 1000m costs about $8-9.
