Hi. There is a trick I've learned that helps with difficult gathers/ruffles instead of using two rows of breaking stitches. It is to take fishing line, and zigzag over it-trapping it in/to the fabric where you would do the old two rows. Then use the strong fishing line to pull the gathers/ruffles to what you want, then sew them down and clip out the zigzag stitch, freeing the fishing line (to be rolled and used another day). Hope this helps!
@LadyRebeccaFashions
@LadyRebeccaFashions 3 жыл бұрын
I had thought about trying that, but then I remembered I still haven't serviced my machine, so it's still not doing zigzags reliably. I really need to get that fixed.

@@LadyRebeccaFashions I have the bad habit of buying too much!! The only good thing about that is if I make a horrible decision I usually have enough to save the project. After the project spends some time in the corner being ignored and or cursed at.

I don't have problems with dolman sleeves, because I cut them straight across, shoulder and sleeve, similar to a traditional kimono. The sloped shoulder/sleeve design is period, but will always restrict range rove of motion. I don't think the 1950s designers cared much if you could raise your arms! Or move anything! That said, you look adorable in that dress! I love the victory rolls, yes they're 1940s, but so what! Those colors look wonderful with your hair, and the dress fits so well. What a lot of trouble you took with matching the plaid, good for you. I think a lot of 1930s plaids weren't matched AT ALL. That's the way I'm going to do it. 😂😂😂

Oh same! I've had it happen accidentally with stripes, but I don't do it on purpose because it means using more fabric and no thank you. I'm certain that I've seen pictures of extant plaid gowns that weren't pattern-matched, so I don't feel bad not doing it myself.
@LadyRebeccaFashions
@LadyRebeccaFashions 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I don't always try to pattern match like this, and it's true - they often did not do it, historically speaking, either, but the plaid was so bold on this that I knew it would drive me crazy.

I feel like the problematic joint of the top and the skirt was because of all the seams and gathers on the skirt. Maybe replacing them with circle, 3/4 circle or even half circle skirt would make plaid pattern more visually pleasing for you. the under the waist part would be smoother, the skirt would be easier to attach and to match the pattern, but it still would be full and twirly.

When I started started sewing, I preferred dolman sleeves, as I had no idea how to set in a sleeve. I also used raglan sleeves for the same reason. They sure did use more fabric, but both were very easy to sew. I look back now, after setting in hundreds of sleeves, I wonder what my problem was.

That dress looks so cute on you! I have another Butterick vintage pattern with a dolman sleeve, which was also binding up on me and restricting movement. I dealt with the issue by sewing a teardrop-shaped scrap into the underarm seam as a sort of gusset. I get almost full range of motion and it's not noticeable unless I try to raise my arms over my head.

@LadyRebeccaFashions

@@eeyore_chick6059 That might make it slightly more difficult, just because you'll be grading the waist to a different size than the bust, but it should still be doable. Check back for that video next month and I'll show you how! :)

a solid green or red velvet would be a stunning belt. velvet or shiny taffeta if that's the name for it. since you have a small waist it would look so cute. at least in my mind it does.lol

Thank you! I tried it with a red patent belt, but red or green velvet does sound nice! And the sewing ability is all from a lot of practice. My beginning projects did not look great. :)

i love dresses like this, and especially in busy patterns, but i always use circle skirts cos i'm terribad at pattern matching, and then i can't achieve the same volume as a gored skirt. if you were ever to make this again, would cutting the two front panels as one work? this assumes having fabric wide enough to allow it, but i found the "tree" effect of the diagonal in the front not laying the same as the bodice more distracting to the flow of the silhouette than the sleeves (which i thought were quite cute on you, even if they're annoying to move in lol). that being said, trees are very on brand for the season and the dress's inspiration
@LadyRebeccaFashions
@LadyRebeccaFashions 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you! Yes, I think cutting it on the fold would work. It would change the grain of the fabric, so you'd probably have to let it hang longer to make sure any bias stretch has fallen out before you hem, but it would definitely help avoid the tree effect!

Beautiful lady! I was thinking the same as you when you didn't like the dress, I thought to myself, put on some lipstick and hairdos, you're going to like the dress! I would like to know what kind of girdles you wear underneath!?
@LadyRebeccaFashions
@LadyRebeccaFashions 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you! I actually didn't wear any kind of girdle with this, though I'm sure I should have. so this was just with tights, a modern bra and camisole, and a Malco Modes petticoat!

Interestingly enough, as a very busty plus sized gal, I have found that vintage style butterick patterns need very little alteration to fit me proportionally.

Love it. I am wondering if you could have added more ease in the bodice to have more room to move your arms, it doesn't look like i would expect a dolman sleeve to look?
@LadyRebeccaFashions
@LadyRebeccaFashions 3 жыл бұрын
I don't think more ease would really do anything besides look more baggy, though apparently gussets in dolman sleeves were sometimes a thing.

this is the 2nd video of yours that I have viewed. really enjoyed the corset from the different time periods on your body shape. now I am a new subbie. do you sew for the public? if so do you find that larger women are poorly represented when it comes to fashion? I noticed that most designers think all larger women are large in the same way....not all of us are blessed with an hour glass figure, i find a lot of clothes don't fit my body shape. i also like looser fits, i'm old enough to want to be comfortable. wow never saw anyone take so much time lining up the fabric, it sure does pay off. I am enjoying your channel.
@LadyRebeccaFashions
@LadyRebeccaFashions 3 жыл бұрын
I do take commissions, but generally it's for cosplays/princess dresses etc. But yes, I think larger women are definitely not well represented in fashion, and clothes often don't fit right. For example, I love that Torrid exists, but all of their clothes seem to be empire waists, which on my body, is not flattering. It's hard to find something that will be comfy, flattering, and fashionable when you're a larger size.

I so hear you on wasteful pattern layouts! And a printed tartan instead of a woven one, so the print was off... Thought about dolman sleeves... designed for the ladylike types who do the washing-up, but have a man to change the lightbulbs!! I've just finished my #OctopusMaxi Christmas skirt, which was Simplicity S8923, and which was soooo wasteful for the godets! (Yes the skirt is on Instagram). At least the offcuts are big enough for pocket pieces etc.
