Hi. There is a trick I've learned that helps with difficult gathers/ruffles instead of using two rows of breaking stitches. It is to take fishing line, and zigzag over it-trapping it in/to the fabric where you would do the old two rows. Then use the strong fishing line to pull the gathers/ruffles to what you want, then sew them down and clip out the zigzag stitch, freeing the fishing line (to be rolled and used another day). Hope this helps!
@LadyRebeccaFashions3 жыл бұрын
I had thought about trying that, but then I remembered I still haven't serviced my machine, so it's still not doing zigzags reliably. I really need to get that fixed.

I don't have problems with dolman sleeves, because I cut them straight across, shoulder and sleeve, similar to a traditional kimono. The sloped shoulder/sleeve design is period, but will always restrict range rove of motion. I don't think the 1950s designers cared much if you could raise your arms! Or move anything! That said, you look adorable in that dress! I love the victory rolls, yes they're 1940s, but so what! Those colors look wonderful with your hair, and the dress fits so well. What a lot of trouble you took with matching the plaid, good for you. I think a lot of 1930s plaids weren't matched AT ALL. That's the way I'm going to do it. 😂😂😂

I feel like the problematic joint of the top and the skirt was because of all the seams and gathers on the skirt. Maybe replacing them with circle, 3/4 circle or even half circle skirt would make plaid pattern more visually pleasing for you. the under the waist part would be smoother, the skirt would be easier to attach and to match the pattern, but it still would be full and twirly.

i love dresses like this, and especially in busy patterns, but i always use circle skirts cos i'm terribad at pattern matching, and then i can't achieve the same volume as a gored skirt. if you were ever to make this again, would cutting the two front panels as one work? this assumes having fabric wide enough to allow it, but i found the "tree" effect of the diagonal in the front not laying the same as the bodice more distracting to the flow of the silhouette than the sleeves (which i thought were quite cute on you, even if they're annoying to move in lol). that being said, trees are very on brand for the season and the dress's inspiration
@LadyRebeccaFashions3 жыл бұрын
Thank you! Yes, I think cutting it on the fold would work. It would change the grain of the fabric, so you'd probably have to let it hang longer to make sure any bias stretch has fallen out before you hem, but it would definitely help avoid the tree effect!

this is the 2nd video of yours that I have viewed. really enjoyed the corset from the different time periods on your body shape. now I am a new subbie. do you sew for the public? if so do you find that larger women are poorly represented when it comes to fashion? I noticed that most designers think all larger women are large in the same way....not all of us are blessed with an hour glass figure, i find a lot of clothes don't fit my body shape. i also like looser fits, i'm old enough to want to be comfortable. wow never saw anyone take so much time lining up the fabric, it sure does pay off. I am enjoying your channel.
@LadyRebeccaFashions3 жыл бұрын
I do take commissions, but generally it's for cosplays/princess dresses etc. But yes, I think larger women are definitely not well represented in fashion, and clothes often don't fit right. For example, I love that Torrid exists, but all of their clothes seem to be empire waists, which on my body, is not flattering. It's hard to find something that will be comfy, flattering, and fashionable when you're a larger size.

I have a similar video coming up in about a month - it will be on grading up commercial patterns, when they don't go to a large enough size. Is that what you were looking for?

I love the plaid, but the 'xmas tree' effect of the matching down the front threw me off. It ended up looking good on you though :)

Yeah, that threw me off at first too. I think it's growing on me though!

You may hate the song Last Christmas (you're allowed, I'll let you 😄😄) but check out the film of the same name. Pure Xmas feel good schmaltz 😍

But does the song play in the movie? Because if so, I can't watch it.

@@LadyRebeccaFashions only a bit; how about I tell you the time stamps and you turn the sound down 😄

@@samwhyatt8685 Hahah! Sure, if it's really that worth watching! That song seriously induces feelings of rage in me.

It has a lovely message. So turn the sound off: From the point she gets thrown out of Ed's flat until she slams her suitcase on the counter when she gets to work. From when the shop owner says 'Christmas Gibbons' until the male customer leaves the shop. Grinning donkey nativity - don't ask! 😄😄 it's very brief Show near the end, main character sings it 😊

@@samwhyatt8685 Yikes, that's a lot of occurrences of that song! I'll keep your tips in mind if I do decide to brave it though. Thanks!
