Күн бұрын

We have had an ad-hock dining table for a couple of years now, and I finally got around to making a new one. The top is made from some black Valchromat (colored MDF) same with the stretcher and some wooden dowels for legs. To combine them, I 3d printed some large brackets. Also found a couple of places I could use 3d prints to help me out in the build process.
The parts can be found here: www.thingivers...
Hope you like the video.

I was thinking about how much of a pain it would be to cut the notches in the support pieces, then boom, 3D printed cutting guide. Genius.

Hahah, same with me. I was like, uhhhh I am not looking forward to this. And then I found out I had the exact angles in the 3d model.

Nice build, any update on the osmo finish? I would have thought a clear water based poly would be better suited to the Valchromat MDF but i haven't worked with is yet so thats just an assumption on my part. I could see the finish looked patchy, I've used lots of hard wax oils and the shot you showed applying the osmo looked to be too much, i find with any hard wax oils its best to apply a very thin layer either with a non abrasive pad or a credit card then buff off all excess after 15mins or before it gets too tacky till dry then after 24 hours apply another coat and repeat for about 3 to 4 coats or more till even. Did you get any swelling on the cut edges from the finish being applied? I know from experience that normal mdf can swell a little on the cut edges with priming them. Anyway great build, hope its still holding up to daily use.

Really nice looking table! I’m interested in how sturdy it is. I also build a table with a x-shaped apron and it was wobbling quiet a lot diagonally. My apron wasn’t as heigh as yours though so the long leverage of the legs might have caused it to wobble. So did you experience any trouble with the sturdiness of the table?
@FlokrollProjects
@FlokrollProjects 2 жыл бұрын
Hi there and thanks for watching. It is not that sturdy, it got some wobble even with the extreme angles on the legs, but its mostly because its so light. But it is still used as my home office/dinner table for the whole family every day, and is still going strong :D

Nice! Great composition. Our kitchen table also serves as the kids’ desk, art studio and Lego assembly area. Are the dowels strong enough to support that kind of general use? And are you open to sharing STLs? Thanks again for your work!
@FlokrollProjects
@FlokrollProjects 4 жыл бұрын
I can sit on the table and the kids have tried to destroy it the last week. Still holding. I can do a pullupp from the dowel inside the 3d part. So I think it will hold a while. But the table is lightweight and a light shove will move it. I will share the files of course, but no guarantees follow them 😀😉

Cool stuff. I wish Valchromat was easier to get in the USA - it appears to be widely available in Europe. Here, there are limited distributors and the material is quite expensive. Also - I realize this is a more moisture resistant product than standard MDF - but any concern about using this for a table top that might see moisture? I didn't catch what you were using to seal it - are you depending on that product to protect the surface from fluids or is Valchromat much more moisture resistant than I am imagining? Also - willing the share the material you used to print the cool brackets? I assume something a lot tougher than PLA - Nylon produced by SLS?
@FlokrollProjects
@FlokrollProjects 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, i understand it is hard to come by overseas (a bit strange though) The Valchromat is a bit mor resistant then normal mdf, but you have to seal it with a good product even if you just plan to use it as a corner table. I used a hard wax oil mix, that is supposed to be good enough for countertops (but i am not super happy with it) I just used normal PLA, it has been holding for a year now :D I will keep you posted on when it fails. (i had a pretty solid thickness on it though)

Nice build! What’s the durability like with the Osmo? I’ve been doing some valchromat projects and I’m trying to find a nice and durable finish.
@FlokrollProjects
@FlokrollProjects 3 жыл бұрын
All my carpenter/builder friends says that its super durable. Maybe i am doing something wrong when applying, but i find the finish to be not so good when exposed to heavy daily use. I am in the process of adding a new coat of Osmo to this table, (the good thing is that this kind of finish make this kinda easy)
