Making a BMX Video Part By Yourself

A look at what went into making my latest self-filmed video part for ‪@CultCrew‬
I wanted to show the whole process, start to finish, including plenty of footage that didn't end up in the final video. The footage is almost entirely chronological, shot between December 2022 and May 2023 in North Carolina, Maryland, and Oklahoma.

This is absolutely amazing! Riding is so unique and the flow is just... you are like from another planet! In the mean time the shooting is so good, if say to somebody that you can shoot an action video only on tripod, they will probably just laugh, but this is just amazing! The edit was astonishing! Most amazing BMX video I have ever seen. I’m still riding as i have since 1980. Love the fact there is no music. Just the ambient sound. Captures how it truly is (unless you a music user…i am not). Sincerely, greatest video of all time to express the emotion and feeling to those that don’t know what bmx is about. We all bmx’ers get this vid 100%. From the attempts, the denials, the come backs….we bmx’ers know this. But to show a BMX video to the public, a video that truly “shows them” what it is… I think this is it, or at the very least a high contender. This video shows the heart. Love it!

Learn basic tire grabs, then 1 ft tire grabs, then you're basically there. Just reach a little further and you've got it!

Thank you! I usually shoot in Panasonic's natural profile, with the contrast/saturation/sharpness turned down all the way for some flexibility. Color grading isn't my strong suit, so I don't really mess with log.

Your videos are the sickest. They remind me of those hours before Christmas dinner on which the streets are empty, but you're all set to cruise and explore by yourself. I've never really thought about if elbow position affects manuals. Whatever works for you! No right or wrong way to do it, as long as you can keep it going

Incredible edit. Shooting like this feels like a bit more of an art project, an appreciation for the space that you're in, and allows you (forces you?) to frame shots perfectly in a way that's hard to with a mobile camera. I love that you just went with the environmental sounds too, no music - bikes and terrain make great sounds.

Thanks so much! I love the various spaces that your bike takes you to and try to do each spot some sort of justice, whether it's just showing the trick the best way I can, or getting a few shots to try to capture the vibe of it. Using a tripod definitely does force you to shoot in certain ways, but trying to find the best way to marry the limitations of using static shots with the opportunities the spot provides is one of my favorite parts.
