Hi Craig, nice vid mate. With regards to your van, if it has the flat four engine they are pretty basic. If you can identify where the oil came out from that will give you an idea of how serious the problem might be. If it's from one of the rocker covers the problem might be a simple to fix one. Those engines are known for the rocker adjusting nuts to come loose and then the rocker starts to clatter and it could become loose enough for the push rod to fall out and it could possibly hit the rocker cover which is just tin held on with a spring clip. Prise the clip down with a screwdriver or bar to remove the cover and check all the rockers. Hope this helps bud. Cheers.

Dude...your van!! I'm not a mechanic but I have found youtube honestly really good for tutorials..I've put together my aircooled engine that way...if yours is a water-cooled 1.9 dg engine which it might be..they are relatively easy to take out and work on ...if you know tools then you'll he able to have a crack on it 😊

It's not really practical to tow the van all the way up here to replace the engine in the alley behind my house. There's a community garage here where you can rent a bay with tools and equipment, if you have something like that in your area you could get help from other people, mechanics are helpful that way normally because we get experience in vehicles we might not have worked on before. Hope you can get it back on the road soon.

Bad news about the van bud, best bet is to tackle it yourself, that’s how I learned. I used to spend many a weekend stripping down engines, suspension etc and rebuilding them when I was your age. Get yourself a manual and have a crack at it, those old VeeDubs are simplicity to work on and parts are plentiful and cheap. I’m fairly local if you want some help and spiritual guidance mate, PM me. 👍

If it was a water cooled version then a GTI lump from a mk3 golf is a good option. With your bus being an early air cooled even considering that is going to add loads more work with pipes & mounting a rad where it was not designed to go. Doable but time & money. Surprised a your recon crapped out so soon.

1. Haynes manual. 2. Notepad and pen. 3 cardboard and sharpie. 4. Video camera / camera. 5 set of spanners. 6 socket set. 7. Trolley jack. With the above and time you will be able to get most stuff done on your van documenting it as you go with notepad and pen numbering, and correspondingly laying parts out on cardboard and taking pics / vids. So you can then reverse engineer it and replace parts. Learn as you go. I did a 1969 bay window vw transporter engine like this, strip down and rebuild with no prior experience or training. You are a totally capable chap. Use google and youtube for research on anything tricky. Good luck, its an adventure you will find rewarding... be sure to film and post the excitement of the 'will it start?' video.

Agree with this 100% and coincidentally I'm also self taught starting with a 68 Bay :) If you can get your head around electricity then motor mechanics is basic stuff for you my friend and your van is a great place to start. Shame I've just moved from Suffolk to Wales or I'd be on my way to help but I'm sure there will be someone closer to at least offer you the space to work on it.
