If you use the die cast metal 1/24 scale car bodies to make RC versions, they really shine when you add suspension with the added weight. Just another level of realism.

This is terrific fun - congratulations! I absolutely didn't notice the transition from cardboard prop building to CGI background. I imagine that the action was gripping enough to allow "suspension of disbelief" to weave its magic.

Awesome project you guys! I love that you did this, and it's fun and encouraging for anyone into miniatures, low/no-budget filmmaking, and having fun replicating the kinds of things we enjoy in movies - in this case, chase scenes. Your model buildings are super fun, and I am stunned at how you were able to add functionality - including steering AND suspension - to a model car kit! That's something I've never seen before. Well done with your storyboards, too! I think this sequence sits in a kind of "uncanny valley" where the viewer knows he's seeing miniatures, but there are details that come off very realistic. In case it's useful in the future here are all the tips I can think of: • shoot with a wide angle lens, and with as much light as you can crank in because a smaller iris means greater depth of field. • shoot in slow motion - slowing in post reduces frame rate, and even phones can overcrank considerably • regular dirt can look like large rocks at scale; grout is very very fine and can work for sand/gravel/dirt in miniature, and hide the gaps between building and floor • adding some ground-hugging smoke (like from a backflow incense burner) can look like fog for the cars to drive through; fog machines can add a general haze, which can also add to the look • the cookie idea is fun; make several in advance (they aren't expensive after all) so you have a few takes on the day. (Personally I would've mounted them vertically to look more like something real-world, but that's just my taste.) Again super job!

Love your work, man! Really impressive! I worked in Hollyweird for over 30 years as a cinematographer and lighting director, both in live action and miniature F/X. What you're doing is super cool! My suggestions are to add more physical weight to the cars, and shoot everything in slo-motion (most phone cameras can do 1/4 or even 1/8th speed). You can always speed shots up in editing (Davinci Resolve is an amazing package that's completely free!). Making slo-motion faster is way better than slowing down regular motion. It's a little picky, but one of the dead giveaways of miniature photography is a super shallow depth of field. Get as much light as you can to stop it down for more DoF. Your stuff is awesome!

For better suspension action in little vehicles, load it up with some ballast. Get some preload on those springs so the car doesnt jump around. Birdshot is good, just mix it thru some plasticine and stick it to the floor under the hood and in the trunk out of sight.

If I have anything to add, it’d be that the inner bits of cardboard, that wavy bit that adds that cushion, removing the two outer pieces of card leaves you with something resembling corrugated metal. Some friends of mine use that trick when making sheds for their model (or even toy) trains.

I was waiting but it never came. When shooting miniatures, you should shoot at 90fps or 45fps depending on the scale of the car. When played back at 24fps, it will give the appearance of being full scale.

"We're literally just a couple of guys having some fun with RC cars", sorry but you're a little more than just that. I mean the fact that you storyboard your shots, you clearly know before the filming starts exactly how you want each shot to turn out… This makes you 100% more professional and prepared than anyone involved with any of the latest Disney series. I believe that the 'Acolyte' had up to 200 million per episode to spend and they were actually rewriting, ah, no I don't think they would have had anything to rewrite, more of a second thought I guess, because a second draft implies that there was a first. Before this turns into a full blown 'old man yells at the sky' I'd just like to say that you have done an excellent job, well done, well done indeed. Film making should be 100% a meritocracy, not a room full of the types of people who are too passionate about diversity and its all encompassing privileges to even consider they're dangerously under-brained. 🙃👍 Oh, for the love of Dog, have a wall of text and the knowledge that there is an old man somewhere not so politely telling the sky to return his bleeding glasses, and how it has been consistently and routinely disappointed in him since the day he was born, and it is about time it pulled its socks up and just get on with it.
