Hi John, great to watch the tiller take shape. The finished article looks fantastic. Having worked in the Painting Trade and weatherproofing boats in New England I would still have concerns over the Bolt Holes. As the weakest point on the original tiller, they will remain the weakest point on this one and using oil, which needs annual upkeep, it may be an area that gets neglected. It will certainly be an area where water will make its way to - as the timber expands and contracts - even sightly due to timber type and laminate construction. Would you consider either two pack or similar product to line the bolt holes - applied with a pull through? Rust-Oleum do some Marine Grade products that may suit. I suppose it won't make it bullet proof but 40 years would be an easy target for the tiller then. Sorry geeking out on Coatings!

Hi Ciaran, the bolt holes certainly are the weak point where moisture could lodge. I'm not up to speed on marine grade finishes. I'll check out what Rust-Oleum offer.

Beautiful job John. I'd love to see a video on ripping thin veneers like you did on the table saw. A comparison of different tools, table saw vs band saw. Pros and cons of each. Methods for each. Etc.

Reminds me of the tiller on my father’s first boat, it had a cat’s head carved at the end which was very comfortable to hold, nice build!

That turned out amazing, and that osmo oil really brought those contrasting colours to life. Regarding the glue on your clamps, I will put a coat of paste wax on mine every now and again. It stops the glue sticking to them and it just flakes of when dry. It prevents problems during the glue up.

Beautiful job on the tiller, John. I am in the process of building one myself and I picked up some valuable tips from watching your video. The next time I am in Ireland, I would love to visit your well designed and stocked shop. I will bring a good Single Malt to add to your collection. Slainte Mhath Dr. Steve

Turned out cracking John. I agree with everything you said at the start when cutting your strips on the table saw, another option if you still want to use the table saw would be to lower your blade run your piece then flip it over and run it through again. I'm not trying to troll you just share knowledge sir. Glad your friend is happy with it thanks for the video and sharing it. Going to have to get me one of them there saw rasps things lol

I am interested in learning more about finishes and there is so many to learn about. I have a few and accidentally get things as shiny as I would like sometimes. I got some yorkshire grit from England a while ago as I do a bit of wood turning too. I like your video's even though you talk really fast you are clear and easy to understand. thanks for helping and taking the time to teach us. BTW. great job as usual. Bill from Australia.
