Can I ask why the nylon thread in the hat band? Does it have a purpose? Or is it a decorative piping code?

It's called a reed and adds stability to the headband and helps retain the shape and sizing.

Why do you tie the hat so high up on the block? Does that down-size the hat? I always thought you should tie it at the very bottom?
