In this Movie I set about one of the most amazing pieces of flint I've probably ever had the luck to try my hand at to see if I can reproduce an ancient dagger,.
If you like the movie and want to come and try doing it yourself with me visit my website www.will-lord.co.uk

Not at all disappointed. You've demonstrated the skill it takes to get a decent blade. It's no wonder once they figured out bronze and iron they abandoned stone tools. If you mess up a metal tool, it can always be melted back down and started over. Stone is unforgiving.

the skill that you have shown in making this dagger Will, is exceptional....I watched from the beginning, and was totally consumed with AWE !....99% of the flint knappers couldn't even come close to your skill level, or your ballz. I'm 76 and I know virtually nothing about knapping except what I have watched, I do however know how to judge the human animal, and you never cease to totally amaze me......please continue, and THANK YOU for doing these videos man !! ......OnWard........

This huge stone is great for those of us who are clueless about basic principles of knapping. It lets us see really clearly how things work: where exactly a strike is made, how that relates to flakes coming off the underside. It did not die in vain!

I did not read but a couple of these comments. I do know that breaking a work piece is a chance you take with each strike. One hell of a fine job you did on both pieces. I swear quite a bit napping myself. Appolagizing is a great thing for the children, but sometimes it’s easier to ask for forgivness than permission. You certainly earned the right to say whatever you like. The stone was singing (break me). Great video man!!!

Feel for you. Wasn't fun to watch it break. I noted that you still managed to get a decent dagger however. The pieces you took off will make some beautiful items as well. One thing I've noticed with knapping is that an item is only a total loss if you want it to be. There is always something to do with even small pieces leftover. Kind of changes your outlook on a lot of things in life.

Damn, well you called it from the get go. Can you comment on how you could have approached it a different way? Perhaps by working towards the center (like from the hilt or base of the handle) and working to the center. I have no idea. My favorite thing to do it to break my bifaces as soon as I get them 90% complete... Nerve racking. Thank you for sharing this video though, it is helpful and instructional. Also inspiring I suppose because half of the art is making the best out of a given situation. Still turned out to be a fine blade.

I thoroughly enjoyed watching you two dance, and listening to the song she sang! My heart sank when she split, and I felt your pain as well. Would you be so kind as to offer your opinion as to what exactly went wrong on that hit? Not enough support on the tip, too much weight on the handle end, a mix of both or ???

It took somewhere from sixty to a hundred million years for that beautiful piece of flint to form from the silicates leached out of the bodies of millions upon millions of dead filter feeders, compressed under the vast weight of their calciferous husks stacked in a column a hundred metres high, then one day a bloke picks it up and hits it and... fuck! ;-)
