Thank you so much for this, I'm working on restoring a super old Spanish Toledo Dagger that was found buried near my aunt's garden, I'm looking forward to making a sheath for it! Thanks, this was super helpful!

This is definitely the best scabbard making video I’ve seen. I’m trying to learn a bit of the trade myself. Is there a name for the round tipped rod you used for shaping? Or was that something you forged yourself?

Great vid buuuuut... Two things: 1) IMO bluing the fittings wasn't needed, the contrast between metal and leather looked cool already. You can prevent rusting by popping the pieces into an oven, bake at 410 F (210 C) for an hour and quenching them in oil right away. That way they'll have beautiful golden hue. 2) Hay mucho bluing agent. You don't need to drown the rag in the stuff, just a bit is enough, it'll last you longer.

Can i ask what type of wood you used, as well as asking felt or wool for the inside? Also what did you use to glue the two pieces of wood together and how thick is the leather you used?
@MitchelJacobsen8 жыл бұрын
The wood was poplar, but the type doesn't really matter. I used felt for the inside, and the leather was 3 oz.

Nice build, but are those two loops just epoxied in?

Great work! Did you skive the edges of the leather at the sewn seam, or burnish the seam? What kind of metal for the chape and throat? Thanks for posting!
@MitchelJacobsen7 жыл бұрын
The edges are not skived, but cut at a slight angle, and holes were punched at an angle so that when stitched, the leather would butt together with a slight seam poking up. This was then burnished. I used mild steel sheet for the chape and throat, darkened with gun blue.

Question: Is there any way to add the metal fittings without glue? Maybe something more traditional?
@MitchelJacobsen7 жыл бұрын
Traditionally they may have used glue made from hide or pitch, or maybe used metal pins to secure the metal to the leather and wood.
@gordanator20607 жыл бұрын
Thank you. I have heard of hide glue before, pitch sounds promising but I think pins could be the most appropriate. You wouldn't have any articles I could follow would you?
@MitchelJacobsen7 жыл бұрын
Not that I've seen. If you do come across anything in your research I'd appreciate knowing! Another option would be to make small tabs on the metal fittings that could be folded inwards to be nailed into the leather. That in combination with the glue seems like a good option.
@gordanator20607 жыл бұрын
Yes. I'll try and remember to leave a note if I find anything. Perhaps another option could be just to forget about fittings all-together, do you think that's plausible?
@MitchelJacobsen7 жыл бұрын
You could certainly forgo any fittings at all. Most historical examples I've seen have metal fittings, however.
@kevincolwell95755 жыл бұрын
great work. I can make a sword easily but the fittings for the scabbard are more challenging for me. I have to practice (and I tend to use thicker metal and that may be a problem). One thing, don't let gun blue touch your skin. It is really carcinogenic!
@MitchelJacobsen5 жыл бұрын
Get some sheet metal and practice shaping and brazing or soldering. Thanks for the advice about gun blue!

@@MitchelJacobsen I am a brazing fool, it is just the forming of the toe for the scabbard that I need to practice!
