Making a Damascus Chef Knife from a pile of nails

This knife was made for my wife who has a small hand so the handle is slim. This knife is lightweight and suitable for handling vegetables.
I love the process of turning fantasy into reality and the sense of accomplishment that comes with seeing the results.
About the material: The nails are high carbon steel nails and before forging, I did a heat treatment test.
Steel powder contains large particles of nickel, which is where the reflective spots on the blade come from. If you look carefully, you will find that this knife is not pure black, but has many other colors. This is not a camera error, this is real. Once I figure out what's going on, I'll show you the process specifically.
Finally, thank you for watching.

@@geraldstamour1312 nah…..the metal is likely hot garbage. Made well, yes, exquisite craftsmanship obviously, but starting with a base metal of mild steel nails…. The intrinsic metal qualities is what’s lacking here. Will it cut sure will it last likely, but chipping, rate of holding its edge, overall length of sharpness… likely sub par. Nothing on the creator, just not great knife steel to start with.

That’s a beautiful knife Han, i don’t think I’ve seen the blank twisted so much as you did in this video. The handle turned out great such a great piece of wood. 👍🏼

Judging by how easily you drilled through the tang, the nail steel does not harden appreciably. Very interesting. And very well photographed.
@HansKnives
@HansKnives 7 ай бұрын
That drill bit is made of tungsten alloy. Can penetrate 60HRC steel. My oversight, not showing it in detail, and the handle part is not heat treated.

Oh! I failed to notice that the tang wasn't hardened. I'm currently wrecking drill bits in an effort to get through a tang which I did harden. I won't do that again.@@HansKnives

4:39 I can never figure out why forgers never use a runout surface to keep their material from sagging in the press. It's a pretty knife, I love the wood.

Very beautiful, but why do you made this Damascus pattern? Basically you need thin layers orientated with the edge, twist/welding/waving just mess up layers each others.

Blade is too thin , cutting edge is not hollow ground , how long does a blade forged from low carbon steel stay sharp , clanp it in a vise and try to bend it. Next time try using masonry nails they are high carbon steel or steel cable . I had a friend that forged knives from steel cable , much better than nails . I could tell by the sparks from grinder that you were using low carbon steel
