From start to finish, the making of a deer antler scales on a skinning knife.
This channel mainly focuses on Hobby Knife Making and any projects we have around the House and Garden. I don't claim to be a professional Knife Smith and I don't and never have offered knives for sale. The way I do it is not necessarily the right way, It is simply a hobby Incorporating Wood working, Metal working and Leather working, recreating age old working tools as in a recreation of the 1950s British Army issue knife, Hunters Knives, skinning Knives, Fishing / Gutting Knives and Kitchen or Chefs Knives. The power tools and hand tools used in my videos may be used in a way that is not recommended and is in no way a tutorial of how to use tools of any kind, always be safe and wear the necessary safety equipment and use your tools in the way that the manufacturer recommends.

Very cool , I’m getting back into making some EDC and some neck knives. The last one I worked on was in the early 90s . 1/4 SS with black delrin with a aggressive diamond pattern and the knife breaks completely to be cleaned . But, Now I don’t have a wire machine 😎

what is the black backing he is putting on the back on the antler? can you glue the antler scales directly to the knife tang?? Also if the knife i am making is only being used as a gutting knife. does it need to be pinned or is the epoxy enough to hold ??
@GAN369
@GAN369 5 жыл бұрын
Vulcanised fibre liners are the black liners between the steel and the antler. Yes you can glue the antler directly to the tang. A good epoxy will last a long time the pins are just to be certain they never come apart. Thanks for your questions and good luck with your knife build.👍

Explicit Blades if your looking for "best" then build one... but, I have the same 4x36 that he has and it works great, I got mine at Menards (I don't know where you're from, it's a Midwest USA tool and home improvement store) and it's like $100, then you can get a spindle sander for $70 and have a perfect set up (for most)

I would make the scales thinner before gluing, and possibly angle down so that they are just a little thinner near the blade. This makes it less blocky. The handle seems too fat. Making them thinner on the inside means that you don't have to sand off so much of the rough texture on the outside like you did. Leave as much of that as you can, just knocking off the sharp stuff. Otherwise you might just as well use a soup bone. The handle looks pretty short, too. Do you like that? Especially with a short blade, I want a handle long enough to extend past the mouse of my hand. I don't want to handle it with my thumb and forefinger. This is just my advise and I don't mean to insult you. Overall, you did a nice job.
@briancoghlan7446
@briancoghlan7446 5 жыл бұрын
Handle looks nothing like a soup bone,I like the contrast that the sanding made.It is better than just the brown solid color.The handle is shorter than I would make but many knives are made with short handles and blades.
