Thanks for the video! I never even considered stealing down from old jackets. I am off to the thrift store!

Thank you so much for sharing. My wife and I do a bit of sewing our own stuff and now I will not be uncomfortable trying this. Again thanks for sharing.

Just a tip, when you r taking the down from other things. Get a seam ripper and just rip out the seams that make the baffles. When you rip, or unstitch those squares it will eventually leave you w one giant compartment full of down.

That a freaking great idea to go to thrift store.

If I was going to it again I would have done the stuffing part inside of a tent to ease the cleanup. Good luck & have fun.

I have used a sleeping pad for the past year in temps down to 12f and only got cold a hand full of times mostly from heavy wind or getting wet; & I have a cheap 20f sleeping bag. After this winter I wanted to try to put together a better sleeping & shelter system. The bag & pad I use are very bulky, so I wanted to try some different stuff; just don't want to spend big $. Anyhow thanx buddy, Peace!

Nice job. Just do not let it get wet. Down doesnt insulate if it gets wet. Wool will insulate when wet. Wool is about the only thing that will still keep you warm wet or dry.

Thanx man. $7 for the coats, $1.29/yrd for the nylon @ 3 yards, about $3 in shock cord, cord locks off one of the coats and oh yeah 1 shop vac lol. So total around $40 or so. Still worth it though! Thanx for tuning in mate.

So we kinda think alike, want to slim down the system, tho i just use a closed cell foam, that is 24 x 5 inches and weighs nothing. Geez man i finally found a bag that goes to -17c, It is very rare to find even that low around here. Before i found this bag 2 weeks ago i used a -10c. So 0f is the lowest i have ever seen around here lol. You did a great job man

HA HA HA! I can see me trying to do that...All that fluff everywhere...My wife would say a few choice words...lol. But glad to see it is done and that it does work.

1lb-13oz Just got a scale. Wish I would have had a lighter fabric. Silk maybe or some super thin polyester. Got that sport nylon on the cheap $1.29/yd and used it in my haste. Still less than half the weight of my synthetic bag and smaller than a foam sleeping pad. Learned some good lessons for the next try =) Thanx for the look. Peace!

Hmm that is small, just need one for extreme cold lol. You got me thinking, i been thinking awhile now, have only 1 jacket, hard to find around here. So they might actually be small enough to try lol

Very nice i was thinking you would have filled the columns , by turning the vaccum on blow mode. lol. Nice job man. I am not sold on the under quilt, since it would be the size of a sleeping bag. I use a sleep mat and it has taken me in very low temps. tho kinda wonder how small you can make them and work in -20f

Wow man that was really awesome and it came out perfect. Way to stick it to those shameless extortionists who sell camping supplies. I'm gonna try making one. I'm not spending like a thousand bucks for a couple squares of nylon and a tiny comforter lol

Sorry some how I missed your comment here. Anyhow Thanx man. I can't wait to get it out in the cold this year & give it a temp rating. Peace

Just bought a digital food scale & it turned out to be 1lb-13oz. I should have used a lighter material but found that sport nylon for $1.29 a yard. Still with a down sleeping bag both would be lighter than my 5lb synthetic bag. What i really need to work on is a bug net. See ya soon buddy =) Cheers!

Hows that uq holding up?

A stunning first effort. Very professional looking. How did you determine the height (thickness or loft size) of the tubes. Was there a certain loft inches and thus a target temperature rating you were shooting for? How did you determine the amount of down to put in each tube to keep the tubes full of down and to prevent the down from settling toward your fanny and leaving no down around the shoulders? Great job Regards, Sarge.

Great video I've been thinking of doing something similar. How has it worked out over the years? Would you do anything different like size or material?

Looks cool, but I'm wondering too, what is the weight?

How wide are your baffles? Looked like 6 inches when you had the yard stick up next to it. Would you keep them the same size if you reedit it.

It one of my fav's. I got a line in on some cool shirts at my local market from a small vendor. I just two others & ordered some more. Had to have that one though, my youngest daughter insists I'm gonna run across Bigfoot on the trail lol! Thanx for watching bud. Cheers!

Thanks for the vid. Working with down looks as messy as I imagined. All thing considered, is doing it DIY worth it? The finished product looks great. What is your opinion about the effectiveness of an underquilt? Common knowledge is that when you lay on down, it compresses and is not effective at warmth retention. What did you find in real experience?
@0718kuhn10 жыл бұрын
So I Used this On My AT Thru-hike this year. used it ever day for almost six months and I'm happy to say it has held up great! For me it was good to about 30F with a tight, low tarp pitch to break the wind. I'll be posting a follow up vid on it soon.

Did you weigh the under blanket?
@pyrofful6 жыл бұрын
Has anyone ever thought about sewing one of those emergency Mylar tight folded paper thin "blankets" on the back inside of one of these before you see in the baffles? Would that just trap to much moister?
@0718kuhn6 жыл бұрын
TJ Jones I machine wash & dry this one I don't think Mylar would do well in a dryer. I think it would extend the temp range just for a night on the outside hanging underneath but it probably would collect moisture as you said.
