Making a Floating Wall Shelf with Hand Tools.
The dados are cut with chisels and paired to final size with the Lie Nielsen Router Plane. I then cut notches in the shelving units that nest inside the dados of the support rails.

Ok Nic, can you just once use a power tool, so we with less ability can feel better about our selves. LOL, Nice work.

Nice project and well done! But how are these floating shelves when you see their support? I thought the point of floating shelves is to only see the shelves and no support. Otherwise it's just a shelf shelf.

Hey Nic, I love the design and ended up making the shelves myself. I'm almost done and am wondering if you decided to glue the joints at the end? Any suggestions for a loose fitting joint? Love the channel, thanks!
@NicTaylorWoodworking
@NicTaylorWoodworking 3 жыл бұрын
It shouldn’t be a major issue if the joints are a little loose. If it’s really loose, you could run a screw or dowel through the back of the uprights into the shelf. I did glue mine. Good luck!

That is aesthetically simple and beautiful. Did you glue the joints? Really nice work, man.
@NicTaylorWoodworking
@NicTaylorWoodworking 4 жыл бұрын
I did glue the joints. Though, i think if I made this shelf again, i would make the dado a bit deeper and use screws to secure the joints from the backside. i like the idea of the shelf coming apart and flat packing. thanks for watching and for the kind words!

This might be a stupid comment, but seriously, how much weight do you think those can hold? I would like to make a few sets for around my house and one would be for my office for about 70 paperback books

Looks great. How did you mount it to the wall?
@NicTaylorWoodworking

I used keyhole mounts mortised into the back of the uprights.

Thanks! Long shelf: 42” x 6” Short shelf 21” x 6” Supports: 13” x 2” All material is 3/4” thick. Have fun making this one!

@@NicTaylorWoodworking Loved the video, and am adopting the design. How long are the over hanging end of the shelves? Assuming the supports are 16in apart, this would imply about 5in on each side for the long shelf (42 - 32 = 10) and 2.5in on each side for the short shelf (21 - 16 = 5) but from the video they seem like they should be equal. I'm guessing it's 5in but figured I'd ask! Thanks

There are good video’s on how to saw on youtube as well. Just basic technique I guess, but it was new for me when I started out. Check out Matt Estlea on sawing, or Paul Sellers. Paul has a LOT of great video’s and basic projects. Those helped me to develop my basic skills such as sawing. A good sharp saw is necessary though..
