Making a Garden in Appalachia & An Easy Trick for Staying Cool

We finally got the rest of our garden planted and even managed to plant Granny's! It's making a garden time for sure in the mountains of Appalachia. Stick around till the end of the video to see a trick Matt uses to keep cool when working on hot summer days.

My mother soaked her okra in buttermilk overnight. I wish we had done an experiment with unsoaked to see which came up faster or the difference. Best wishes for a bountiful garden.

Loved seeing your family work in garden. So many good memories of being in garden with my Granny. She would throw her okra seeds in the freezer the night before she would plant. She always had the best garden. Everybody called me Kay, but she would say, come on Katie let's go to the garden for lunch. She always had on an apron with pockets. She would put a cloth, a small knife and the salt shaker in her apron. She would use the cloth to wipe off the vegetable. The knife, to slice it for her and I to eat. And then we had salt if we wanted it.We would go to the garden and enjoy fresh tomatoes, cucumbers, green onions and peppers for lunch. Now I'm my grandmother's age, and love to show my grandkids how to make things grow like my granny did.

We were raised on pink eye purple hull peas. (From MS, now living in TN) My grandmother cooked them literally every day. They were the bulk of their garden. We seed save and plant yearly, as well as MS silver hull crowders and lady peas.

Last year I planted my okry during a hot dry spell. Instead of soaking it I planted it it a row and put in about one seed every two inches thinking I might get enough to come. Since it was so hot I soaked the whole garden including that row of okry. It came up in about three days and I swear it looked like more came up than I planted. I had okry six inches tall within a week after they came up. I never seen the beat of the okry in all my born days! I had more than enough for me, the stink bugs and the Japanese beetles. It's cool watching the shade creeping across the yard in high speed!!

😂 That's the way I like to plant also. Plant enough for all of the critters then you should get a good mess of vegetables for yourself. Then, the fattened up critters make it to the table also, right between the taters, squash, okry and cornbread 😋.

A great video showing how ya'all do your gardens. You folks have got such pretty places. I wish that we could get everyone in America to accept the idea of growing at least some of their own veggies and such. Even just a patio garden with veggies and herbs grown in containers would be good. That's what I do at present. What a nice video watching your family doing your planting.

That’s interesting with the bandana. Many years ago, my husbands grandmother taught him a similar thing. When my husband used to get headaches when he was little, his grandmother would take a facecloth, get it well saturated in ice cold tap water, wring it out good, and fold it lengthwise. Then you lay down, close your eyes, and lay the cold cloth over your eyes. When the cloth gets warm you unfold it, swing it around in the air for a bit, refold it, and put across your closed eyes again (it’s cold). It really works! I have fallen asleep many times with a washcloth over my eyes 😀

I had bad migraine headaches when I was growing up, they started as far as I can recall in 1982, when I was in 9th grade. When I say bad, they were so bad it felt like I had jackhammers, bass drums and explosions going off simultaneously in my brain head, along with my eyeballs hurting. I wish cold compresses would've worked for me; mama used to have to call my pediatrician to ask for a prescription for Tylenol 3 with codeine to make the pain go away. I've heard that feverfew is really good for migraines. I've never tried it before though so I can't testify to its effectiveness personally. As we have gotten older, we sold it and live in our home in SC, near our children. I miss the mountains so much, and would move back right now. We always planted acre peas, purple hull peas, zipper peas, speckled butter beans, green butter beans and sometimes we planted crowder peas. Nothing better than food you’ve grown and gathered!

There is also a “golden eye” pea that is delicious! I love pink eye peas, cow peas, crowder peas, black eye peas, and field peas. A pot of peas and a cake of cornbread is a feast fit for a king 😊

I love fresh peas! The small, tender ones they call lady peas are my favorite. Blanched in water, drained and tossed in brown butter. So delicious! Oh and yes, I know that worn out feeling from working all day in the garden. But it feels so good to get a shower afterwards and know you've put in a good day's work and will have all the delicious food to show for the effort.

I have lost my persimmon cookie recipe. We harvested them after the first hard frost and that made them sweeter and more flavorful. They wild and grew plentiful in central Virginia. I have not seen a tree in a long time. Thanks for the garden videos. Love to you all.

We had a persimmon tree in California. Mom made the best persimmon cookies. Where I live now is too cold for persimmon trees to grow and stores here rarely have them. When I do find them I buy a bunch and freeze the pulp and we have the cookies again.

I was so happy when your mentioned that your were planting Mississippi Pink Eye peas. I hope you like them. I am soon to be 67 years old and grew up eating these peas. I'm not sure about different varieties and these may be the same - purple hull and field peas. I like them better than crowder peas. I grew up in NE Mississippi in the Appalician foothills and my mother grew these and we ate them almost daily. She cooked them with fatback meat in them. I cook them with a little oil and more spices and they still taste good. I and many people like to put them over crumbled cornbread with some added juice (pot liquor) from the pot of peas on top. Someone told me to dice a tomato and an onion and put that on top when eating them. Really good! I love your channel. We speak the same language and I grew up eating the same way you do. (biscuits and chocolate gravy - which my mother called "sop chocolate)."

I feel better hearing how tired y'all were at the end, reminds me that's normal (it's the 'over-doing it in the yard' time of year here in Texas where daily temps are already high 90s). This brings back so many memories of growing up. When my dad retired from the military we planted a garden. It was hard for us kids we never planted a garden…but when it came time to pick the garden mu sister stood up and started to sing the National anthem. My mom red faced from the heat wanted to know what she thought she was doing we had work to do. My sister said…we’ll we have to stand for the anthem I thought these peas might do the same so we won’t have to bend over so far. 😊 Needless to say mom did not find the humor in it. Tip for keeping cool was we froze water in mason jars and as the sun melted the ice we had cold water to drink.

I got my first pepper today. I had been buying the bags of small red yellow and orange mini bell peppers and saved some of their seeds and they are just starting to produce. I live in Jacksonville Florida May God Bless your gardens to feed your family abundantly.

I've not had any for years now , but my favorite bush bean is the old timey Pink Tips . My granny would make a big pressure cooker full with some strecked meat ! Oh my , with fried potatoes and some kilt lettuce and onions .

I’m trying cow peas and winged beans for the first time this year. I planted the seeds in March and they are finally now about a foot tall. I think I may have planted them too soon, but being in souther Texas, you often have to plant early in order to get a crop that isn’t burnt by the sun in the summer.

My great aunt lived on a mountain in north Alabama. She believed in hats and bonnets. If it was cold you needed a hat.....if it was hot you needed a hat. She never owned an air conditioner her whole life and she died in her 80s. She believed in not working around lunch time (heat of the day). She would eat small then lay down on her floor...(the coolest surface in the house) then go back out about 2 pm. She would be up and going at daylight. My grandma kept a frozen jug of water in the kitchen for my grandpa.....he would come in every couple of hours and drink that ice cold water.

Alaska is my favorite pea and in northern KY we plant them on Good Friday. Peas are cool weather, so plant when you plant onions, potatoes broccoli cabbage cauliflower.

I just planted feverfew this year - trying to make a medicinal garden, alongside the regular garden. Feverfew is also good for skin itching, asthma, allergies, menstrual problems, psoriasis, fever, nausea, vomiting. Skullcap is good for headaches, nerve tremors, stress, menstrual tension, insomnia, nervous exhaustion. Been using herbs for years now, don't go to doctors unless I need stitches or an antibiotic and that is when it is really bad!! Another thing we have lost throughout the years. The ending of this video was perfection!! LOVED IT.

I just finished plowing my mama's garden tonight. I laid off the rows to plant after dark. I had to use the lights of the tractor to see what I was doing. She said she was going to be in it at daylight to finish her planting. (I had already plowed several patches earlier and they are already planted.)

I tried valerian root years ago. Gave me horrible vivid nightmares as well. I chucked that stuff in the trash. Herbal remedies have broad range of effects. You guys are awesome! God bless

I used to grow sweet peas but it takes so so many to make a good mess of them. I froze them usually but sometimes canned some too. they are so good fresh from the garden though. I hope yours do well, Tipper, so you can make that delicious and nutritious dish that you fondly remember.
