There's a thing called a "transfer punch" for transferring hole locations from one piece to another. You should get much more accurate hole locations and save yourself the step of marking with the Sharpie. I wonder if you can get drill guide bushings that fit screw clearance holes to use as a guide for the tap drill. That would cut out the punching step too.
@auxchar2 жыл бұрын
Alternatively, he could have drilled the holes with one of the CNC machines he built, and program it with the correct hole spacing.
@SidneyCritic2 жыл бұрын
Yeah that's the better way to do it. For Alum I would just spin it up on a lathe with any bright bar, but for a lot of punches a cheap way is to grind a point on a close fitting flat punch or the shank part of a broken drill.
@timplett12 жыл бұрын
In a pinch you can also use a drill bit the same size as the hole in a rail, just only drill just enough to make an indent, that will center the smaller bit later.

Curious why you went with threaded rods to hold everything together instead of fabricating some brackets. That probably would have helped with the overall rigidity too.
@SidneyCritic2 жыл бұрын
Yeah there is no register/doweling to locate it properly/strongly, it's just friction between them. He probably should've 3D printed a plug to go inside the ends that are a tight fit on the rod, that way the rod acts as a kind-of dowel.

Oooh, way to really push the barriers, fantastic work Ivan. One question though, should you do a lot more to stiffen the whole frame? I mean isn't the quality of a print reduced by vibrations, something that big, will easily pick up vibrations, so you should add dampening feet, and stiffen the whole thing up as much as you can. I'd also triple or quadruple check that the whole thing was squared too. I read somewhere that the more you tightened the tolerances and locked down the construction to the nth 1/1000 mm or less, it also improved the details. The setting's were were different, but the result of that idea stuck with me. But I feel like it should be true for 3D printing too as any vibration of flex would be bad right. Good luck and keep inspiring us all, thank you so much for that. :D PS, I can almost feel my impatient for the rest of this story :D
