Making A Gourd Shekere

Follow this easy step by step video and create your own percussion instrument. I have done this with middle school students and adults of all ages. Each one is a work of art! A SHEKERE is a West African instrument that has many different names but called shekere in Nigeria, axatse in Ghana, djabara in Guinea. oh and by the way that is not a shekere that is an axaste rattle

A shekere and axatse are essentially the same thing. The slight difference is that axatse have a whole on the bottom, and are played using the knees along with the hands, and the shekere is just played with the hands, and has a whole on the top ,near the stem. Since this has no whole and has no example of it being played, it can be either.
