Realistically you should extend the back out and make it shoulder mounted and fired. That way not only can you actually aim from the side, you actually can manage the recoil better because now you can use your entire back to support it instead of just your arms taking the brunt of it without any other support. Also the barrel could be longer otherwise you will be left with a lot of unburnt powder The helldiver 2 autocannon actually represents this really well

Even if machined from steal and actual 40mm cannon rounds were used with FSDS projectiles, it would be too heavy to lug around and if fired it would dislocate shooters shoulder or if supported, kick you like mule several meters backwards, or most likely just detonate since chamber pressures on those things are rather ridiculous. Thats why all AT rifles pretty much require two man team to operate and lug around since you need it to be heavy to help mitigate the recoil, or be mounted on turret. Against modern even lightly armored vehicle, its effects would be scratched paint with short barrel like that. Make it recoiless rifle and it might have some chances to actually work.

exactly what the commenter above said. that being said, the pressure released from firing the cartridge would have to be great enough not only to propel the projectile out of the barrel, but to travel back along a gas tube in the split second that it's still (greatly!) pressurized (before the projectile leaves the barrel), AND to push back the entire mechanism for it to cycle. the engineering issues with a design similar to the video's would be: making the cartridge have a way higher pressure release due to combustion than the current cartridge design (basically redesigning the entire thing cause at that point the propellant would have to be either pressurized H2 (more H2 = more pressure released on combustion), another gas that can release more pressure (i'm not a chemist idk what gases can do that, if there are any), or using entirely different, perhaps solid propellant (I.E. gunpowder)); making the chamber stronger so it is rated to withstand the new higher pressure; ensuring all the parts of the new mechanism can also withstand the higher pressure (recoil spring, bolt assembly, gas system, etc.) ALTERNATIVELY just use a f'in motor like the first reply said lmao
