My wife is tuning 30 in December, I just wanted to buy her something nice... But then I stumbled upon this video, I cannot unsee it now 😅 I need to make something similar for her, albeit I don't have the same good skills as you. Very nice piece of work, one of the finest builds I've seen on KZbin, and I do spend way too many hours each week watching videos. Bravo! 👍

I wonder how does the balance change when the cabinet is open - does it not tend to flip forward when the mass center is in front of the pivot point?
@gregoryraiewski4 жыл бұрын
The balance is great. I designed a bunch of versions prior to building this with that in mind. I've started adding four bolts instead of two just for extra rigidity, but even with two, the cabinet can't pivot forward past vertical as the back stretcher prevents it from doing so, so the cabinet is slightly leaning backwards and makes for a good viewing angle in the mirror. I've made three of these so far - the prototype for my own house, and two for customers, and all has worked well for the last two years since I started making them.

@eh_bailey5 жыл бұрын
I saw you said it was finished with "hard wax oil." Can you be more specific? I saw some of it being brushed on. I am familiar with past wax, wipe on poly, and other oils. Whatever it is, it brings out the grain and figure in the in the walnut really well.
@gregoryraiewski4 жыл бұрын
For this particular piece I used the Maker Brando Co. Simple Finish. You can basically flood on a first coat, wait for about twenty minutes, and then do another. This would have been pretty difficult to finish otherwise with all of the smaller components.
@Wood_Slice4 жыл бұрын
nice work, keep it up. Just a question @6:00 or so is the drill press wobbling?

Thank you, John. I'm not sure haha but that drill press is pretty old (and borrowed). I just got a new drill press though and it definitely doesn't wobble :)

What are the white chalk arrows for? I noticed them on this piece and the coffee table before the router step. Ps love your work
@gregoryraiewski5 жыл бұрын
Thank you, Nick - I appreciate it. I use the chalk to visually mark the grain direction so I get a better cut off of the router. However, about halfway through this build I ended up getting a spiral up-cut flush trim bit to replace my straight blade bit, and it really doesn't care which way the grain goes. In the router section of the video, you might notice that in one shot the router bit is red, and in the next it is all metal :)

Yes. Since I showed the process in one of my other videos I didn't want to repeat it here, but it's the same sort of thing. I start with a digital sketch and then lay it out on MDF and cut it out.

@gregoryraiewski4 жыл бұрын
Thank you, Seth. Yeah - I have a few boards back there. When I moved into this house, I bought a miter saw and built a surfboard rack because I saw one online that was around $350. I got really carried away with woodworking after that : )
@travisradke97535 жыл бұрын
This is stunning, my favorite piece of your line, for sure. Thanks for the build video, lots of really nice details. What kind of screw/hardware did you use for the pivoting joint?
@gregoryraiewski5 жыл бұрын
Thank you, Travis. I appreciate it man. I used 1/4-20 threaded inserts and brass connector bolts. Since making this first armoire, I've added a second set of them between the cabinet and the legs, so there are four total holding the cabinet sturdily in a nice little lean.
