It's high time to make a handle for my mora knife blank. It's been sitting in wardrobe for like 3 years and i never got to using it. Despite that fact, it remained sharp. Unfortunately, some rust spots showed up on it.
The process of making a handle was taking place without the use of any tools except for the knife blank itself, as well as wood that you can find in the wild. All in all, this is the third mora knife that i have done anything with. First one was a laminated classic that i attached to a stag handle, and the second being a small, carving, laminated mora.
The skill of makig handles for your tools is crucial. Dick Proenneke, which is a precursor of long-time living off grid and homesteading, had most of his tools carried into the Alaskan wild without the handles. Thanks to that, those tools were lighter and took much less space.
Just to add something about the cordage. The correct method for making a willow bark cordage, would be to strip the bark out of it's outer layer, which doesnt add up to the strength of the inner bark. After removing the outer bark, the inner bark should be divided into strips of equal width, so that the later cordage would be even, thus giving out maximum performance when it comes to durability. Before making the actual cordage, the bark has to be slightly moisturized, in order to make it more flexible.
