Making a Laminated Canoe Paddle from Salvaged Wood

In this video I make a Laminated Ottertail Canoe Paddle from reclaimed wood. An Ottertail paddle is a traditional type of paddle which lends itself to solo paddling well due to the shape of the blade making it more efficient and less tiring to use in a lot of circumstances. In this video I set about making one with some reclaimed mahogany teak and pine. Enjoy!

I have been making paddles for our canoes since about 1993, but am humbled to admit I learnt a lot watching this! Hard to take in that this was your first paddle ever.. wow, I am so impressed

I like the way you are very safe with the table saw . You use a separate piece of wood to push it through . GOOD ! That's the safe way to work .

Really enjoyed the video, well edited showing all the stages and tools. I haven't a bandsaw and can't get a blank so I think laminating the paddle is probably best. It realy makes a difference when people share

Well done. You are a good woodworker. I envy you guys who have lakes and rivers. I am from South Africa. One question though, for rowing what is the optimum ratio of length to width of the blade? Are there scientific results?
@jamesshort6856
@jamesshort6856 3 жыл бұрын
Depends what you are doing. Longer and thinner blades are better for long distance, shorter and wider blades are better for shallow water and going quick with a higher stroke rate

Would layer after layer of linseed oil alone make the paddle impervious to water?
@chrishagerman3011
@chrishagerman3011 7 жыл бұрын
Try hemp oil or Tung/Teak oil. Linseed oil needs wood preservative as well to prevent rot. Badger Paddles sells a super hemp oil for paddle treatment. Added bonus over varnish of being much easier on the hands.

Make the paddle like a spoon shape so it pushes more water. Curve the handle for more power This old style not cutting it no more! > Know how much energy is lost by not doing this? LOTS.! Its the 21 Century! Time for changes NICE JOB THO to bad didn't spoon it and curve it .

I agree, even though I dont row or paddle. What is the optimum ratio of blade length to width for best results?
@426superbee4
@426superbee4 4 жыл бұрын
@@janviljoen7001 he hee i try to use a trolling motor if i can myself. depends on size of your boat Normal about 2 foot long blade. Width depends on how strong you are . I like 18" wide> remember the paddle is spooned to catch more water as it pushes the handle is slightly bent to the spoon side for power strokes
@jamesshort6856
@jamesshort6856 3 жыл бұрын
If you are paddling a long way or just casually, having a less powerful, more flexible blade will be much better, and kinder on joints. Also if you soon it it isn't symmetrical on the back and front, which you need for some strokes.
@jamesshort6856
@jamesshort6856 3 жыл бұрын
@UC7dTIYmAcC4odasVuikHWnw no lol your wrong. Spooned paddles are for racing only. Bad for everything else, and negatively effect steering. What you can do as a half way is have the blade slightly forward offset from the shaft, but you still have symmetry issues with that
@426superbee4
@426superbee4 3 жыл бұрын
@@jamesshort6856 i agree Time to change the paddle, You want as much energy as you can get out of a paddle, and less work, and you want them to be light

Looks like PVA. If so, that's the only flaw. PVA is water soluble. There are good marine grade glues that are perfect for this kind of use.
