I put together this holster for a Kimber 1911. It has a thumb-break and I finished it with olive oil. I lost a lot of footage from this project, so the final parts of this build are missing.

Great video tutorial..have you tried using an oxidation patina finish on Veg tan before..such as #1 baking soda powder 4 or 5 spoons to 8oz of water dipped for 2 to 10 minutes makes a light brown to rich dark brown color..#2 is household bleach makes a wonderful light london orange tan to rich dark orange tan and even darker tan patinas in 5sec, 10sec, 15sec, 20sec, 30sec dip then a conditioner..try on scrap veg tan to dial in the color you like to the amount of time..no need to use leather dye..#3 I've heard about hydrogen peroxide 3% sprayed on veg tan gives a patina..but haven't personally tried it as the bleach method and the baking soda powder works so well..Best wishes my friend..

Dan Baldwin Funny thing is, that’s not the biggest needle for that machine. It’s more of a medium size.

I saw that you were using a real gun to make the holster one thing that I use is a toy gun that looks and is about the same size I have a few of these guns and can put them in the holster as I am forming it to fit the gun I check yard sales and flee markets for these types of guns. Also I use Vaseline to treat the holster and have found that it works just as good as leather oils I do this 2 times a year. I am also a civil war reenactor and have a belt that is over 20 years old and it looks as good today as the day it was made. I hope the few tips that I have here will help.

That's badass. I was thinking of you and your work while doing my own odds and ends. I love your sewing machine, I've been hand stitching my projects and it's a giant pain. I modified a shoulder rig for my 357 I carry here in Arizona, adding a few peices but nothing fancy. Now I'm building a shoulder rig from scratch to accommodate a mini or micro uzi, with 3 mag pouch under my left arm and the uzi under my right with a quick release to rotate, and another quick release to free the gun entirely. Where do you get your snaps? I've been buying random ones but the quality varies greatly. My antique bianchi shoulder rig for the 357 has amazing hardware compared to what I've found on ebay. Also, completely different craft, but I learned that soaking the rough side inside a jacket with leather dye will stiffen up leather that is far too soft for my taste. I have a trench coat that I like some features about but it's too soft for my taste so I'm making it stiffer and changing some things around on it.

Thanks for checking the video out. My favorite place to get hardware is Weaver Leather Supply. products.weaverleathersupply.com/search?w=4p%20snaps Their hardware and leather tools are the best. Also, check out holstersmith.com They have also sorts of supplies for holster makers and knife sheath makers.

Do you cut both pieces of leather the same size or do you make the outside piece bigger for the wet forming?

They’re the same size. I cut one out. Then I glue it to a bigger piece of leather and trace around the cut to size piece, with my craft tool knife.
