Making a Leather Lunch Bag
Making a lunch bag out of leather isn't something you'd usually imagine doing, but a leather lunch bag is a great eco-friendly project to gift or sell. Making a leather lunch bag will save you lots of paper and plastic bags over time, and leather lunch bags are super beautiful looking as well!
To make this leather lunch bag we used a nice pull-up hide from Weaver Leather, cut to a pattern we drew out. We hand stitched the leather with polyester threads, and used solid copper rivets and plated brass trim to finish off this design. We decided to use a single external seam for our leather lunch bag, however you can do hidden seams or gussets or even piping if you'd like - it's all up to you! Just make sure to use some sort of dyed or oiled leather, as it will make the inevitable food spills easy to clean off your leather lunch bag in the future!

Thank you Chuck! I’ve no woodworking skills and nowhere to do woodwork in my house, but your leather mold idea is brilliant! I know I can work with leather and you’ve just opened a whole new load of possibilities for me! 😊 It also makes it easy to build up layers of scrap leather in order to get exactly the depth required for mobile phones, tins for possibilities pouches, etc.

Well Dan take a look at Weaver leather supply and their veg tan bellies for only $20.50 or even their Hermann Oak bellies that's 9-10 oz (5/32 or 4mm) for $30 and practice away. Bellies don't have as tight a fiber structure as the shoulders I use for belts, but it's good enough for many small parts. I started doing leather work in the 90s using bellies because that's what I could afford. Weaver has them down to 3/4 oz which is good for wallets up to 7/8 oz for key fobs or small clutches and things, use your imagination the bellies are long enough for belts if you're not too fat, but because of its lower density it may stretch too much. 20 bucks for 5-7 square feet of good leather can't be beat. www.weaverleathersupply.com/catalog/cp_/shop-now/leather/veg-tan-natural/bellies

With all the hand stitching that you do, you could use a proper stitching horse - full sized, sit down, foot controlled jaws, stitching horse (not one of those under the leg jobs).

I've watched a few of your videos, and many of Chucks. One thing I don't get is you said you can't sharpen, but your skiving straight knife is always sharp. So you must be able to sharpen. With that said, you really need to expand and use knives, like the head knife. It isn't all that hard, and if I can do it, you can. Also, and maybe I just haven't watched enough of your videos, but I haven't seen any tooling yet. Lots of Veg Tan leather being used, but no tooling. I don't care for the Sharidan style, so I just find line art on the net and use that. When I'm not doing something Irish or Dragon related.

Edge bevelers seem to come in fractional inch sizes. But it appears you guys use the size 0 (seen on the side of the beveler itself) for a lot of your projects. Which fractional size corresponds to the 0 size on the beveler? Or am I making an assumption here? Thanks. I enjoy your videos.
@Corter
@Corter 5 жыл бұрын
I've only used them in full number sizes - 0, 1, 2, etc. Not sure what the fractional size would be! We mostly use 0's just to knock the slight edge off of things, we don't go for a fully rounded edge with bigger edgers most of the time.

@@Corter- The Weaver site shows the Master Tools Edge Beveler as starting at 1/32nd going to 7/64ths. But the example picture of the tool appears to be a 0. Guess when I order I should call them and ask.Thanks for the reply.

Here in Texas a bag would need a good lining to protect it from the 32oz medium rare T-Bones we'd stuff in it. Next time maybe? =) That sounds kinda weird, doesn't it? Stuffing cow parts back inside other cow parts. =/ LOL Out of curiosity, what leather did you use? Good lookin' stuff, and as always a cool design executed with a high degree of professional quality. LOVE it! [EDIT] Ah, pull-up. (Found the answer a little further down). Beautiful color and texture. That stuff ages so well too. Lots of character obtained through daily usage.

I’m new to leather work and I’m hoping you can answer this: Why do you use a lighter on the end threads?
@Corter

We use synthetic threads so they melt and seal in the stitch hole - just a little added reassurance that the stitch line won't unravel :)

The 'forks' you use for making the stitching holes, do they ever need to be re sharpened?
@MountainFisher
@MountainFisher 5 жыл бұрын
They actually are not very sharp, but are pointed and the more you use them the more polished they become I bought mine at Weaver leather supply. I suggest what they are using, the 5mm spread forks. Any closer and you'll find they're useless on thicker leather though I use the 3mm on 3 oz thick leather when I want a tight looking stitch, but I mostly use the 4mm and 5mm with 5mm used the most. I seldom use my 6mm or 3mm stitching chisels. If I could only have one size it would be the 5mm.
@MountainFisher
@MountainFisher 5 жыл бұрын
@N N I thought I'd give him the extra info because its sounds like he doesn't know very much and maybe I'd help him to not waste his money buying 3mm chisels.

Some people just like certain things more than others. If the people at corter like a rustic, heavy duty rivet for their work then that's what they'll use. Use what you like and what you think is best.
