Making a Lifesize Xenomorph Egg that Opens

hi, i love your videos, as a prop maker myself, i love how you can pull off such a great result on a minimal budget and use of spare materials whilst people spend such big amounts of money trying to be 100% screen accurate when essentially the wow factor is still the same.might i suggest you try using FABRIC MACHE on the exterior of the egg to give that leathery look they have in the film, essentially paper mache but with strips of old cotton t shirts it provides such great strength and texture.

One advantage of not knowing that I am doing is that I'm not afraid to try any idea that comes into my head. ;) I ended up re-doing this egg with thicker craft foam and making it about half the size, so it would support its own weight, hold its shape better, and still be flexible enough to open and close with the fishing-line rigging. You can see the finished egg in action in my "Aliens: The New Hive" fan film--the egg appears about 3/4 through the movie.

So what I ended up doing was making a smaller version out of thicker foam, so it held its shape better and opens more realistically. You can see the finished version in my fan film "Aliens: The New Hive".

Total materials: 1 roll craft foamie 5 cans Great Stuff 2 tubes silicone caulk 2 feet aquarium tube 1 roll 35-lb test fishing line 4 or 5 colors of spray paint

That's really good as far as practical effects go. I especially like the way it opens up. Maybe it could have been a little bit more round, but I'm sure you did everything you could. Other than that though the paint and decorations look great! Look forward to seeing it in a movie by you.

I sat through the whole film & it gave me this whole 70's era scifi low budget film/series feeling LOL,although I'm not from that era,I used to watch movies with my uncle who was from that time when I was growing up.The egg looked fantastic considering the materials you used & when it opened it looked very cool as the green screen fx.You could 've made some home made clear slime to cover the top it's easy & I'm sure it also would had been great.Little kids would love this film,great job.

The difficulty is that I need the bottom half to be stiff so it holds its shape, but I need the top half to be flexible so it can open. It's not hard to do that when the model is small because then the sides don't have as much weight to hold up, but it gets really challenging as it gets bigger and heavier.
