Mortgage & Mitre there ya go! I think I may have made this more complicated than it needed to be, but it’s functional and strong as hell. The knock down joints are still tight five months later, too, so that’s a good sign.

There are tons of unique mid-century bed designs out there. The way you phrased that comment is consistent with the rest of the people who rip off my designs. Please understand the difference between content creators who sell plans and furniture makers who sell furniture. I’ve shipped off two of these beds this year and have two more next month. I only post on KZbin to show clients my process.

I don't have a channel or social media presence to credit you, even if I made something extremely similar or 'the same'. I was commenting to complement you and my experiences doing the same with many other KZbin based 'makers' has been much more friendly. Here's an idea. Maybe don't put your work in the public domain if you don't want people to be inspired by it. You can make KZbin videos private and just share the link if that's the angle you're going for.

freakeystyley34 it’s not about getting credit. Every single one of my pieces has been ripped off over the last year or two by DIYers. Some tag me, and others I’ve come across as ads because they literally paid to advertise it with zero credit until they were called out. The amount of hours that go into design, let alone building, is for growing my business, not for people to hop on for free and dilute it. I get sales from KZbin, especially on this bed. Public domain, be it Instagram or KZbin, is great for business, but as you can probably tell, there are drawbacks. I can’t advertise in a private domain. Inspiration is not the same as outright copying. I’m not saying that was your intention, but I get a lot of those textbook “I’ve been planning X for X amount of time” comments, which translate into “I’m just going to call it quits and use your design instead.” I am nowhere near Klassen level, but I can’t imagine what it’s like to see liquid plastic and glitter rip offs of something for which he put the time in to perfect.

@@theroaringwoodwork2213 I do understand your frustration but I think you need to have a think about who your audience is. Bearing in mind the bed is handmade, beautiful and made of walnut, I'm assuming it's a few thousand dollars minimum to buy one from you. If it isn't then it should be! People who spend several thousand dollars on a handmade walnut bed frame are not the same people who will try and 'rip off' your design by making it themselves even if you gave them free plans. Similarly, the people who watch your videos, have their own workshop and decent set of tools are probably not going to spend several thousand dollars on a bed frame if they feel they can make something themselves. Don't get so caught up on trying to protect your designs. Good design will be copied, it's as simple as that. If you keep producing good designs then people will buy your furniture, and that isn't devalued by someone halfway across the world trying to make something that looks similar.

I don’t know a single woodworker (I’m not talking about “KZbin makers” or DIYers) who is trying to run a business and is happy to see people ripping them off. There should be a respect for the craft. At the very least, people should ask in advance, not tag them after the fact in hopes of getting a like or a shout-out on social media. It’s sad that social media woodworking is all about making things quickly and getting recognition without putting on the time to actually develop skills. Policing these lazy, wannabe craftspeople is by no means a priority, but I’m going to call it out every time.

this is a beautiful bed!! So without oversharing into my personal life here, I have a question. I keep thinking of making a version in oak. I'll use plywood for the center piece so I don't have to worry so much about expansion etc. However, how do you keep it so the headboard doesn't get lose over time and use? Wouldn't it start flopping back and forth hitting the wall at some point?

josephhgoins hi Joseph - thank you. That’s awesome. Some of the tenons on the headboard are glued completely, whereas the ones on the top and bottom are fit into loose mortises and pinned with the brass rods. I’ve been sleeping on this bed since May and everything is as tight as it was on day one. Those Festool connectors are no joke, and they keep the headboard assembly tight to the side rails.

Awesome work! I'm curious about the pinned tenons. It looks like you pinned the outside two tenons? Did you have a tenon or two in the middle that you glued and didn't pin? Also, is there a reason you went with brass rods rather than wood dowels other than asthetics? And last question I swear... It looks like you have the headboard flush with the top of the legs, have you had any issues with the wood expanding above or below the leg? Again, super sweet build!

Thanks man. The bed has been doing very well for me lately. I just shipped one out last week, and have two more orders in line. People have even ripped off the design and tried to sell it, unfortunately, which is super frustrating. Anyway - the bed I made in this video is the actual one I sleep on. I left the slats unfinished, screwed them in, and they have been rock solid and silent for two years now.

caleb johannes thank you, Caleb. I appreciate it. I used the Festool Domino Xl with the Festool connectors. They are super handy. I’m making a big oak bed right now and I’m using the same joinery method. They are really strong, and come apart easily so you can carry the bed parts down a hallway and what not.

Inch and a half walnut side rails are no joke for weight though. Are you still happy with the one anchor and two floating dominos at each corner, or do you wish you would have done two anchors now? Michael Lopez Hi Michael, and thank you for the kind words. I’ve been sleeping on that bed for almost two years now with no issues. The connectors are rock solid. That said, this bed is doing incredibly well on Etsy (I’m shipping one next week and have two more to make right right after that). I’ve been doubling up the connectors on each joint with the one wooden tenon in the middle. That was actually my plan from the beginning but I think I got lost in the build process and placed one in the middle instead of two on the outsides of the joint. It’s a testament to their strength considering that the bed has been held together with literally only four connectors for almost two years now.

They're Levi's 511, which I think are marketed as slim (not skinny - I definitely don't fit into those). I will say though that I've ripped through the last two pairs of them and I only wear them in the shop haha.

Aaron Glancy for any sort of panel like a table or a headboard, biscuits are fine. They’re really only there for alignment during the glue up and don’t add a significant amount of strength since the joints are long grain to long grain. However, I use the Domino XL specifically because of the knock-down hardware I can use with the 14mm bit. In that case, biscuits wouldn’t work at all.
