While I was cleaning up my workshop I found this worn out disc. So I thought about making an axe out of it.

when you are softening the disk to drill it you will most likely want to bring it to a red glow just like you do to harden it but instead of quenching it in oil or water you let it cool in air or in a bucket of sand

Just a tip... Get some carbide tip drills used in masonry and sharpen the tip slightly with your sander and it will go through the hard steel. Its not precise but it works great for something like that
@believeit3203

You have the right idea, you just need to get the steel quite a bit hotter to normalize it to "remove" the temper. Bring it up to red hot and simply let it air cool. It will be soooo much softer. BTW, I love your lathe set-up. It's a work of art in itself.

I made one axe as well and can recommend some techniques: 1. Use an old wall drill with a hard metal tip. Sand it to a lower angle tip and give it drill edges. With this you can drill through hardened metal. There are videos for this on YT. 2. For cutting the metal part I really recommend a stand for the angle grinder. With this you've got one hand for the grinder and the other for your part. As well you're able to work from above. It's much much easier and way more precise. Should cost about 20 bucks. Beside this I really love my new outdoor lightweight crafting axe! Cheers mate and have a good one!

By heating it to a red heat and slowly cooling it. It's called annealing = making it softer. You then heat it again to a red heat and quickly cool it (quench) = hardening. Now you need to bring back other mechanical properties like ductility or you will break the blade like glass = tempering at around 200degC for an hour or so. Cool slowly!
@anthonywalker8683
@anthonywalker8683 6 жыл бұрын
John WURST he did do it backward didn't he lol. He annealed it to try to drill it , then turned right back around ad hardend the edge.. now he needs to heat it back up to around 550f or so for awhile and let it cool SLOWLY as you said

Wonderful project! Give all you home blade makers some advise, to tell if a saw blade is a good steel for this if the saw blade has carbide teeth that are inlaid into the teeth the blade will most likely not be very good at holding an edge but if the saw blade is just steel with no carbide teeth and no different color rings at the teeth it's normally good metal for blade projects. 😁👍 also bring the whole blade to bright red hot allow to cool slowly. This will make drilling very easy. It will be VERY soft do most of your shaping at this stage. Then bring to bright red and dip in oil or water oil is better for this steel typically. It is now VERY brittle be careful not to drop lol do final polish here . Then put in oven on 460 to 475 for 1 hour allow to cool slowly just turn off oven. Blade should have a light to dark brown color. Light polish final sharpening go kill zombies !

For drilling tough steel like that, I highly recommend picking up a set of cheap carbide glass and tile drilling bits. Cheap, because the carbide will chip and break away if mistreated in this manner, so they should be considered "disposable" ... a set from Harbor Freight costs around 9 dollars. Start with the smallest bit, to give yourself a pilot hole, and work up to the final bit size. Finish with a high quality cobalt steel bit, like the ones available from Norseman. A single size bit can be obtained for between 4 and 10 dollars, depending on the size. Even if you make the Norseman bit dull, never get rid of it .... invest in a Drill Doctor someday (or borrow a friend's) and re-sharpen it. It's a lifetime investment in a great quality drill bit. Over time, collect the sizes you want and need, and you can eventually do away with the need to drill a pilot hole with a carbide glass drilling bit. While working at McDonald's, I came across the need to install some rivets in a piece of stainless steel hardware in the restaurant as a favor for the manager. I found that when the manager tells you that such and such piece of steel (looks like a 5 - 10 dollar part you can easily make out of junk steel) is actually worth 70 - 150 dollars, I believe every single word of it now. They use a high cobalt content stainless steel that is as tough as the steel used in heavy duty earth moving machinery or pile driver bits. I destroyed 15 drill bits, including 5 carbide tipped bits, just making TWO 1/8" HOLES. It was unbelievably tough! After all was finished, the much cheaper stainless steel bracket and pair of aluminum rivets did the job holding the part together again where the weld seam had failed, till we managed to get the replacement part in that was on back order. The part in question? The bracket that hangs off the front of the grill, holding the plastic meat trays in position on the front of the grill. One side had a weld fail and it was hanging loose. Cost for replacement? $85. Cost to repair? $35 in lost drill bits, 2 dollars for piece of stainless steel (bent into an elbow) and perhaps 15 cents worth of rivets ... plus 5 hours of my time. It held together for the 3 weeks we needed, waiting on the replacement, without rusting. Afterwards, she let me take the broken part home. I still have pieces of it laying around, but it made for one hell of a very nice knife blade. It was only a few months ago that I picked up my first Norseman drill bit and tried drilling this steel for making my knife ... it got dull, but it made the hole. I also got my drill doctor ... haven't looked back since, and now collecting the Norseman bits in every size I can get my hands on.

The steel you used isn't high carbon steel, only the cutters on those modern saw blades are the high carbon part. The rest is low carbon for flexibility. You can see where the 2 steels meet when your cutting the profile of the axe so sorry to say it wont hold an edge on it

He tempered it with a blow torch at 3:07 though so at least it has some tempering even though it isn't high carbon steel, it should hold a decent edge for small work. Its not like he's going to chop down a giant tree with it. :)

My drills are always sharp! some discs are only hardened just by the edge close to the teeth, and others are hardened throughout the body, as in this case. So the drill and the disc have the same hardness and it is impossible to drill it with a hand drill.

I am not a big fan of metal but the HSS-Co (cobalt) drills are the hardest ones as I know and unharden axe is not good idea, I guess. Of course the low rpm are important even if you have normal HSS or HSS-TiN, unless you want to burn out the drill. I don't have standing driller. I really want to have one, maybe someday I will buy one.
