Very nice! Made small hammers for kids but not that small. Presents it’s own challenge in punching, drifting tools may need to be made. Tiny fullers too! Good work! Thanks!

Nice little hammer mate, what are you going to use that for, and I notice you still haven't covered that ceramic wool in your forge, prevent any chance of damaging your lungs when you get older, I would be remiss if I didn't say anything.
@PaulPinto6 жыл бұрын
Thanks Len! And I we’ll definitely cover it ASAP I keep forgetting to but luckily the majority of it is covered in refractory mortar there’s just a little area where it has chipped away

What do you use that itty bitty rounding hammer for? Soft small metal projects? Copper, Brass?
@sdunca48646 жыл бұрын
Love the hammer- would be great with a high polish for folding/raising silver/copper bowls and hollow-forms if the head was a wee bit longer- once the curve of the form exceeds the length of the head you cannot reach the inner wall curves- make the head a bit longer and put a crown on one side and a flat on the other for planishing- Great presentation! You are coming along!
@PaulPinto6 жыл бұрын
I’m not sure what I’ll use it for haha but I bet it would be useful for non ferrous projects. I may even try to forge a little anvil to go with it!

That's actually a great idea.

Paul what kind of steel? Did you anneal after heating and how much did it weigh at the end. Good job, now you need to get a smaller touch mark. Be well and be safe
@andrewlarson75586 жыл бұрын
I believe he uses 4140. Im not sure about the annealing part though. When I forge rounding hammers I use 1045 and leave the hammer to cool in the propane forge. However when I do production runs leaving 20 hammers in the forge to cool is not a option. I usually stack them up on a steel plate on the floor. I haven't noticed any difference in grinding between leaving hammers in the forge and just stacking them up on the floor. I use 1045 for all my hammers because it is more forgiving to heat treat and it has more carbon in it than 4140. It is also much cheaper than 4140. Thanks Andrew Larson

Im actually younger than Paul :) You can see what I make on my instagram page.

I use 1045 and I annealed the steel afterwards in vermiculite so it would be softer and easier to file. I’m not quite sure now much it weighs but I started with a 1x1x1 cube. And your right I need a smaller touch mark hopefully I’ll order one soon
