Letting your player characters summon minions can also be a ton of fun! We're hoping to crank on mechanics for that sometime in the future. We'll likely need to tweak some stuff, like overkill attacks, to make those fun for players to use at the table, but who doesn't want to command their own minion army?

It's important to outline the main purposes of using a minion, and I think primarily they're used to burn the resources of the party. You *want* them to use that Fireball spell slot, you *want* them to pull out their wand and use a few charges to clear a path. More importantly, make sure you narrate the carnage instead of sighing and picking up tokens or deleting them off the VTT with "welp, all of these guys are dead..." Really SELL the ability or action being played out like a movie, and you're the director. It's important to dance that line of player engagement and agency so they believe the resources spent on minions was A) fun and B) worth it.

Minions make great "Lightning Rod" enemies. Enemies designed to take party resources, while STILL empowering them. Much more fun than giving EVERY spellcaster character Counterspell, or forcing encounters until the Barbarians are out of Rage
@demonzabrak
@demonzabrak Жыл бұрын
I honestly think most DM’s would be better suited to the advice of “narrate things less, tell them the outcome and ask them to narrate their own actions.” The trend seems to be “role play the previously made decision, get a ruling, make a roll, be told the result, role play the result, make the next decision, repeat cycle,” and I’d wager that “make the next decision, get a ruling, be told the result, role play the decision and result,” is a better flow. Out of combat role playing is super different and not at all what I’m talking about, this is a tactical speed gameplay theory. It makes the cinematic experience organic and much easier to pull off. You want to hit someone and roll a 12, if the enemy has +3 dex they dodge. If they have less than 3, you hit their magic-aura/shield/armor/natural-armor, incrementally increasing the goal in a logical order and tells you why they missed. You tell them if they succeed at what they want to do before you have them describe it, and which components are responsible. Which lets them describe attacking and being defended against cinematically. If it hits, tell them how much health they have at max and how much they have left, so they can calibrate how serious the role play of the attack should be. The DM’s job is hard enough and once they get used to it most D&D players like describing what they do anyway, so let them. Delegate that fluff to the players. Feed em crunch.
@bhizzle64

One small thing I’d change is to make it so if a minion takes 2-3 of the “not enough” damage types, they also die. I find this can be represented pretty easily, especially if you aren’t using minis where minions can just be coins you flip over after they take their first hit. This way chip damage features don’t become useless while still being relatively easy to run. 2 hit minions have been pretty successful at my tables for some enemies.
@nikolasversteeg
@nikolasversteeg Жыл бұрын
"Chip" damage features usually require a saving throw of somekind. If they fail that and take damage, they would die as normal! I think the intention is to have it so your players don't just spam magic missile or spike growth to easily take out minions.
@zerg0s
@zerg0s Жыл бұрын
Yeah, there really is no need to add contingency for anything like that. Say you cast burning hands at a group of orc minions. They all have 5 hp. You roll extremely poorly and only do 4 damage with the spell. All the orcs who fail their Dex save STILL DIE. Failing a save against a spell that causes damage is automatic death for a minion. Those orcs who succeeded at their saves, and thus only take half damage, they survive and take no damage at all. But since they’re minions and have no proficiencies, they are more likely to fail that’s save than succeed.

And I've used that table more than any other table in any 5e book I've ever owned. Watching this helps me think like a designer not just using some dope rules I found. I used to run an encounter called 'Psychic Wolves.' The idea being that out in the forest there was a special kind of wolf that had evolved in a sense to be able to hunt bigger more powerful creatures like ogres which normally prey upon them. And even the occasional troll. These wolves were telepathic with one another and could teamwork effectively. Aside from everything, they were normal wolves. Did 1d6+2 damage and had +4 to hit. But for every wolf that 'joined in' to the group attack, the to hit increased by +1 and the damage went up by 1d6. The moral of the fight? Don't let the wolves surround you. It was a super fun fight in which something like a weak creature or a minion that can normally be removed in one hit can become a monster threat to the party. Its nice to see that other people have had a similar idea to mine. I still run psychic wolves every now and then. Githyanki have had them as pets occasionally and they've been a stable feature in my worlds every now and then. just wanted to share.

I run games in Pathfinder 1st edition so obviously the numbers dont convert, but A LOT of the 5E specific content in this series is just such smart design that its really easy for me to apply in my own games. I think it speaks a lot to all of your talent that after checking out the Flee Mortals preview I am about to buy a monster manual for an edition I dont even play. Things like the Goblin minions tiny stabs or the zombie speed reduction ability James just talked about are just good ideas that can apply in some form to any TTRPG.

Ever since Matt first mentioned porting minions in 5e, I'd been converting monsters to minions by dropping them to 1 HP as mentioned by Matt, and slapping on the "Avoidance" ability where they take zero damage on a save from AoE spells of any save type. The extra considerations mentioned in this video seem well worth the extra work in creation, particular adding mechanics and balancing to attacking in groups. I'm excited to try them out. I'd also like to add that you are absolutely right about the "Avoidance" + 1HP method making them too easy to kill, and this is coming from a person who used it for years. Even just looking at the 'Minion' trait, I can confidently say that its much better, even before playing it myself. For 'Overkill' I'm reserving more judgement until I try it out.

I super like this idea, or at least the idea of really simplifying the action economy. I've tried many times in the past to add larger group sizes, but my players get bored and frustrated easily. The only way that I could see simplifying it further would be treat them more like persistent spell effects with a reach range, where players roll a saving throw (probably based on the number of them in reach) to avoid or reduce damage on their turn (or be subject to an effect, like being restrained), allowing me to not worry about attacking at all, but I'm not sure if that's an improvement (or worse counterproductive). Either way, I'm super excited to see if minions would allow me to include larger groups to help vary up combat, especially when mixed with standard units as the boss. Bare minimum, this is the perfect solution for my end game boss fight, where they're supposed to fight a horde of cultists, which saves me from having to come up with my own solutions.

I actually feel like the "deal full damage or do none" is a misstep. This means that minions are immune to certain "death by 1000 cuts" strategies, even if that effect were to do all the damage in a single turn. For instance, unloading multiple Magic Missile projectiles into the same target. Or killing a target with on ongoing damaging condition, like setting them on fire.

Great video James! I have loved your blog and game design stuff for many years and I'm glad to see you can make a really good youtube video too! I loved the Flee Mortals preview and supported the project. I've been using minions in 5e for many years, and your system is smoother than mine but I do have a thing people might want to try for big cinematic fights. You use the minion trait to make the hitpoints not quite work the same way as normal. I went a bit farther but kept the one-hit-death aspect. I gave them a damage threshold equal to a reasonable approximation of what a PC could do with a cantrip or normal attack action at that level. Anytime a minion was successfully hit, the PC rolls damage and if it clears the threshold, the minion is instantly dead. If the minion gets hit but not killed outright, no tracking HP, the minion stays alive but it is Staggered for one turn, which is a new condition that means it can move or take an action but not both. This sort of models the thing in movies where an attack causes one of the cannon fodder to stagger back, probably grimacing in pain, but then come back into the fight a few beats later, probably after the hero turns away from them and dispatches a different enemy. Different execution of about the same idea. Anyway, great video on a topic I've obviously thought a lot about, thanks!

I play AD&D 2E and D&D 3.5, and I've been using minions since the early 2000s, more or less using the design philosophy explained here. First encountered the concept in Decipher's Lord of the Rings RPG. Really makes combat way more quick and cinematic, and makes the players feel like they're really, really special. I have an encounter involving a low level necromancer coming up in two weeks, so these rules could not have come at a better time! awesome, awesome stuff!

Thank you so much for these rules! I have been using 4e style minions in my games for years. But this is way more mechanically robust and does exactly what I need for my games to have the most epic of games.

One thing that could be done is instead of straight out removing reaction. You make them horde reactions. If there are 5 or more of these creatures active they can do this once during a full round. That way they can still have a powerful scary reaction but it isn't every single one of them doing it. Similar to how you might have legendary actions or lair actions. That way you can optionally add a threat while at the start of the fight that just like the other abilities becomes less threatening overtime. This would also give the option to give a horde of minions special abilities based on circumstances. Like a plant horde having a reaction to grab a creature moving out of their reach. While only being difficult terrain while normally moving through it. Always remember the useful quick hand for making anything. 'Keep it simple stupid.' More complexity make things easier to break and slower.

This is on the level of the Running the Game videos that I starve for. This is incredibly useful for faster trash mobs to throw at the players.

Perfect timing. I was making up minions for the final encounter of a level one campaign and had them all at 1. The idea of giving them health is way better. Thanks!

I LOVE LOVE LOVE Goblinoids. As monsters they're fantastic. They're varied enough that you can run a whole night and only fight goblinoids. Goblins, bugbears, hob goblins, orcs(not sure if orcs count as goblinoids but they feel like a good goblin boss) I love them all, I like to sprinkle in some trolls or ogres too.

Great topic, I made a worked on this idea for a scenario where the party was in a Seven Samurai situation and they had to lead the villagers against a mercenary‘s turn bandit situation, or goblin/orc raid. I called them mobs and combined them single blocks like swarms, that got weaker, as they took damage representing them loosing numbers. A character would lead a mob and would be a important factor of the village mob servicing over the enemy mob. I like your version cause it has enough simplicity in running it, and enough Fidelity of seeing things happen as the mobs go down.

Finally a real way to do the Evil Wizard and their Cult finale, or to make an actual zombie horde fun, or so many more ideas! A thousand spiders in the forest? Let’s go! Low CR creatures for higher level combat, I’m hyped

Great video! This '"cleaving through 4 monsters at once" is exactly what is missing from some of my encounters. Super stoked for Flee Mortals!
