Your narration is super good. As a SolidWorks expert, I love how you convey your design, and the motion intent, and machining ops on the screen. VERY satisfying to watch the machining ops with the explanations as they occur (with no machine noise). I have a 6040 CNC with a 24K spindle, but watching this, makes me lust to convert my Rong Fu-like (Harbor Freight) manual mill to a CNC machine, so I can reap those sweet 3K, high torque rpm's and the table rigidity. Now if only I did not sit around drooling watching your vids..I would have time to make my own 🙂

Thanks again for the positive feedback, @BrilliantDesignOnline! How do you like the 6040? I don’t think our longing for more rigidity and power will ever go away. I’ve been “planning” a base and spindle upgrade for over a year now. I’ve got most of the parts & hope to get it done when I get some down time.

@@adamdebowski2037 Primarily, I got the 6040 as a learning tool. I actually researched and 'requisitioned' one for my boss, myself being the only user, I had to set it up, set up/learn Mach3, learn F360, learn Vectric VCarve/Aspire, and all the operations. I liked it so much, I purchased one for myself. I have done very little aluminum, but primarily engraving placards, and plexiglass projects and some projects in blue foam since the consequences are minimal if you make a mistake. Overall, it is a great machine, but the low-torque spindle (even at high rpm), low low-end rpm, and lack of rigidity leave it wanting. Beefing up the table helped, but watching you rip through bar aluminum, like a 'real' mill, gave me mill/spindle envy 🙂 'Down Time' 🙂Ha! not with 3 lifetimes of projects scheduled here...

I'm happy to see another vid after so long! I find following along with your process very easy to track. after building my own machine i find using the CAM the hardest part and my homemade machine hasn't gotten that much use because of it unfortunately. Hope to see another vid quicker than last time but i know everyone is busy. Thanks for the great video!

Very sweet build .. I wish I could get stuff done around here but I live in a tech void .. Im in the process of making a smaller plasma table so I can get stuff made for other projects

Thanks! I do. Not much. Less than a thousandth per axis. More in z but I compensate for it in the control.

Wow then I have to do something to my cnc because I have between 8 and 10 hundredths per axis

You must mean 8 to 10 hundredths of a mm, right? That would be around 3 to 4 thousandths of an inch, which is what I’m measuring in. You could get that down by shimming your ball nuts (if you have double ball nuts on your ball screws). The other thing that could be increasing your backlash is Gibbs being too tight.

I think the gibbs are well adjusted but I will check it to see if they are too tight and that is the problem that I do not have a double ball nut it is a simple nut since otherwise the travel of the axes is greatly reduced, especially in x and in y

Building one from scratch using a chuck or 5c could be an option. That way it’s designed for the PM-30.

@@benzhuk876 yeah - this would so far be my plan A. I’ve seen a few on eBay that are belt drive, which would get rid of any backlash, but I’m thinking there’s just no way that going to be rigid enough. If only there was some kind of gearbox with no backlash… truth be told, a 4th axis is something I’ve wanted for a long time, but top priorities now are an upgraded base and spindle. I really hope to be getting those projects underway soon, but have been avoiding it because it means the mill will be down for a few weeks.

@@makosharkcnc7730 I’ve got a shim between the head casting and “sliding casting” to straighten the nod, but no shims at the gibs. Why would you need to shim a gib?
