It's a good reminder of a simple plywood sled and a little human skill can work just as well as the modern fancy and expensive sled's you can buy. Norm made some beautiful furniture with a simple sled and occasionally a few simple jigs. It makes wood working more affordable. Excellent video John......

For these single runner sleds, you can make a matching stationary "sled" out of the same ply stock that keys into the other miter slot and attaches to the table. This will allow the offcut to slide and be supported instead of pinching on the blade.

Thanks John I like the Norm Abram sled rebuild it is great. I made 1 years ago and it's been a really good deal but I think I might make a new one like you did with yours. I think Norm did a lot to move the do-it-yourselfer if you will to build bigger and better things. I think you have taken up that mantle to some degree. Keep them, coming thank you.

Norm! Hey - I can finally pay it back with a tip for John. I know you don't do a lot of small panel sanding like this, but a piece of that big-box store shelf liner (the "puffy" foam stuff) make a great sanding pad. No so mushy that work distort, and nice and grippy to keep your workpiece in place.

Nice simple design ! I want a compact sled like that and im thinkin i could use another piece of plywood the same thickness as the bottom of that sled and make another plank with a slider that can be held in place on the the other table saw track , that would also act as a zero clearance table saw insert and allow me to cut overhangin pieces also with the same sled.

For cutting "in the middle" of large pieces - perhaps, say, a 2 inch wide strip from the sled ("auxiliary sled" with a runner) placed into the other slot would help (will support and run along with the piece being cut)? Used only in this case so not physically attached to the sled in any way - just "auxiliary Norm Abram cross cut sled support" :-)

Would it not be better to have on back end to "push" the work through instead of having to hold the work tight against it?
@robk.5467
@robk.5467 5 жыл бұрын
@@lbowen9708 for smaller pieces sure, a push fence is better...for larger, it's not at all hard to hold it in place. This method actually gives a smaller table saw more sled capacity. With the fence at the back of the sled, you have x amount of distance between fence and blade determining the size of piece you can cut. With the fence at the front, it's easier to support a larger piece as you infeed. It makes 12" cuts possible. Larger too, depending on the size of your tabletop.

Does anyone else prefer the reverse of this, the push fence being on the trailing edge? In truth mine has a fence on the leading and trailing, but a wingnutted adjustable hold down for accurately cutting tapered cross cuts in panels too wide for a sliding compound miter saw to do. It was for a specific job but enough for most of my needs with my contractor saw set up...two of the same chesp 10" contractor tabletop saws mounted side by side. Works pretty sweet.

Nice sled John. Looks like about as plain and simple as could be. The only thing I might add to that would be a self adhesive tape measure on the fence. Of course it would probably cost 2 times what you have in the sled. Haha. Did you have another reason not to add a tape? You always seem to have a plan or a reason for everything. Maybe the reasoning here was as simple as saying " Its just as easy to measure each piece as you need to." Or maybe you had a greater reason. No big deal either way, I just wonder about these kind of things.
