I use organic worm castings. I don't bother drying or sterilizing it. I just pour it in, pull it away from the sides, pack it down so it doesn't move and cap it with sand. Works wonders for me. I don't see any reason to be concerned about sterilization. I don't know of any fish diseases that can live in your backyard soil or my worm poop. I would expect that any dirt, if moist, would be full of nitrification bacteria and seed your biological filter. Warning! Worm castings can be very high in NH4 (like chicken poop hot) so be careful! Backyard dirt not so much. Great video MD.
@chadashton70294 жыл бұрын
Seems like most people use organic potting soil. Easy to find, not very expensive, and I believe it's usually been treated to eliminate any nasty things that could hurt your tank. Of course free garden soil is cool too. Potting soil is definitely just an easy way of getting your dirt.
@E50AK4 жыл бұрын
Yeah I actually got rid of my aquasoil and rescaped it with organic potting soil. The aquasoil I had literally shrunk like 20-25%, it was so well packed after a few months that I couldn't plant anything else properly. Also every time I planted and as the lower layers of aquasoil got exposed to the water column, ammonia spiked and I lost a couple of fish as well! For me the organic soil is doing just as well. Grows plants just as fast and doesn't lead to ammonia spikes most importantly.

@Sir Crankington is the organic potting soil cheaper than aqua substrate or is cost not a factor but the nutrients?
@kotababy80084 жыл бұрын
@@77slate it is MUCH cheaper but i prefer to use it due to the nutrient content. i use aquasoil as a cap to keep the dirt from leeching into the water column, so at the end of the day i end up using both. try it out! do some reading about the walstad method. one of the pioneers of no filter and no fert aquariums

Take a look at Father Fish on KZbin. Try doing a dirted tank with a deep sand substrate. It takes a while but eventually you don't need to do frequent water changes because the tank breaks down the nitrate. You don't need any filtration either. Give it a try.
@ShaneZettelmier4 жыл бұрын
That will look cool with the two tanks, I’ve often thought of doing two tanks for different color shrimp and using one long piece of wood and sawing it down the middle and siliconing it to the sides of the tanks so it looked like it was actually spanning both tanks.
