I got my hands on a big piece of English walnut last week so after doing a whole video on the black walnut for the tree map, I figured why not follow it up with some fun facts about its prolific cousin the English walnut (aka Persian walnut, aka common walnut, aka Jupiter's royal acorn).
Hang out while I dig into the wood to make a platter, spin some fun tree facts, and make a delicious walnut pumpkin bread to display on our new platter.
Seriously. Make this bread. It's stupid good.

We had both types of walnut at my grandparents' house growing up, though we didn't do much with the black walnuts. It was basically a full time job harvesting English walnuts! Fun fact, the green fleshy part (the discarded hulls) will actually kill off plants underneath the walnut trees. My grandpa really cared about his lawn so I had to spend hours running around picking up all the hulls so his lawn would stay immaculate. Once harvested the nuts have to be hulled (removing the green flesh, if it's still attached) and laid out in a single layer to dry for weeks, rustling them around on the daily so they dry better. Then obviously you have to crack all those shells without destroying the nut inside. Then you finally get to enjoy! We made spiced nuts with the prettiest ones. Too bad I hate the taste of walnuts! All that work and I didn't even enjoy the final product... 😅

Once I had a bunch of walnuts I didn't have anything to use for so I blended them in my food processor and added a little oil and some maple syrup and made the best walnut butter. It was really good on apples, the maple syrup really brought it together.

Black walnuts are supposedly more nutritious, taste is more acquired, but CedarCrest black walnut ice cream is good 👍! You can also tap black walnut trees to make syrup, but haven't tried that yet.

I’m not sure about other places, but here in central California many walnut orchards graft english walnut limbs onto American black walnut trunks to mix the local acclimation (drought and pest tolerance) of the native species with the tasty products of the English variety

absolutely gorgeous platter without being completely shorn of all its naturalness. (and filling in with that plastic stuff.) just natural, the way they were made for hundreds or thousands of years. :) 🪵🪹 and i am definitely making that pumpkin muffin type dough bread!! i can just taste it. (i usually use cinnamon, allspice, cloves, and nutmeg, without measuring, til it smells right. and then add grated orange peel. ) Thanks soo much. i loved the history of the trees and the difference between the walnuts. :) 🌰 🌷🌱

Cool content! The extra images (of the trees etc) are nice, but they interrupt the woodworking. Consider having them pop up in a corner of the video, so the viewer can keep looking at the woodworking. PS. Do you know the channel Lofty Pursuits? Your voice and content are really nice to have the same format (voiceover during mesmerizing craft).
