I'm looking forward to watching the results of soaking that at 200'. The prawn pots we use at 300' are lighter built but our tides may not be as harsh as yours. Enjoying the build!

Now I know how to build all these types of different sizes cages/pots. I like to understand what ones I would build correspond / are geared to what species . Great video your very knowledge on this subject. If you have the time and don't mind answering these questions sometime or doing a video on it ... that be great someday. Also not only opening size but mesh size would play a role in defining the cage for the target species.

The shapes and sizes I have seen for crab , lobster ,...etc look usually the same many types i.e either cylindrical , rectangular, or hoop house form amongst a few other creative ones

That should do the trick I would keep clear funnels out of direct sun light though as they can become brittle

The only big difference that I can tell is the trap opening are different sizes / shapes but is this the only major thing other then bait used and location ? That distinguish calling the trap/cage a shrimp from a crab or a crab from a lobster cage ...

Hi trojs I like your prawn pot and I was just thinking would decking screws be ok as they have a coating on them and they are quite strong with a good thread on them ,just an idea may be pots last a bit longer for you

If they are thick enough I have some but they are a bit thin. Some of the black coated screws can last longer but again just need to be thick enough.

Be interesting Troj to see what that light prawn pot will catch deep water. Even though it will never be full it will still be light to pull up from the depths. Great midweek vid Troj. Nice videos, but I have one question that I am curious about. What defines the difference between somebody making a shrimp pot/cage vs minnow pot/cage vs crab pot/cage vs lobster pot/cage. Or is there no real way to target one type of species from the other. Other then the food used and location ?

The size of the entrance and size pot plays a part. The size of the net allowing some species out. Bait as some prefer fresh others decayed and certain types of bait also location. A lot of pots will catch mixed species as you see with the larger pots they will catch crab and lobster even some fish.

Hope I'm wrong, but I think with an entrance of the size your talking about and that mesh size you'll fill up with small crab, in our area we use 1 inch entrance, great video as usual and keep up the good work.

Yes that is a definite possibility especially close in with shore crab. I think the trick will be not to over bait the pot. If it does become a serious problem I will adjust the design.

@@Trojwaterman The problem we had was small crab getting in and stripping the bait in just a few hours almost before the pot had a chance to work.

Maybe need a tougher bait like limpets or older bait. My fathers pot had the same problem in the harbour even with small entrances.

Do prawns prefer a certain kind of ground, rough, rocky, sandy etc?

They tend to be in the weed but they will travel over most ground

do you not have minimum mesh requirements for some fishery's? we have a wrasse fishery here in Scotland to catch live wrasse for use in fishfarms, and the creels we use are a bit like that with small mesh size. the season is short though so guys then put the small mesh creels out for velvet crab and they have now actually been banned due to the mesh size being too small.

No only set nets and trawls. Wrasse and velvet crab are not fished for here commercially

Now you've made it and secured the netting how do you weight it, if indeed you do?

I just use the same black crab pot string in the video or you can use zip ties. I have filled pipe with lead in the past but prefer to save it for fishing weights

It needs to be put in the right area at the right time for prawn it was only tested for a couple of weeks. I made one different shape but same idea many years ago put it in a good prawn area and caught a lot of prawns.
