Curious why you didn't CNC machine the mold positives directly in the modeling board? It seems easier than maching the full item original and then building the mold enclosure by hand? It would also avoid issues with part flipping on the CNC, because you would machine the two halves of the mold next to each other. Also, for us fellow resin casters, mentioning the chemicals you use would be greatly appreciated! I noticed a mold release agent, and I'm not sure what the black spray was. Thanks for the fantastic content!
@RTAFabrication2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching and the comment! I’m assuming I’ve understood correctly, that you’re saying to machine both front and back positives from two separate model boards, then pour silicone over each to create both negative sides? If that’s the case, had originally thought to do it the way, although I did have my concerns/ reasons for not doing so. The concern was accuracy of the two silicone haves mating together, although I know we’re talking minor tolerances really, I wanted to avoid any flashing when casting the resin. There’s a 100% change of them perfectly mating together when the second pour of silicone is poured over the first set silicone half. I hope that made some sort of sense! This wasn’t the main reason, just something that crossed my mind and the following reasons eliminated the above as the way to go. The main reasons I chose the way I did (which is the usual approach I take), is that I will always finish the part by hand, removing any machining marks. If I had machined the two halves from model board, all the text and details would have been positive, so properly finishing all of the surfaces without disturbing those details would have been tricky. The other reason was that I treated the machined part as essentially a prototype unless it was correct, then I’d treat it as a master and move forward with moulding it. I did 3D print various prototypes prior to machining, but having the physical master let me see and feel what the cast version would actually feel like. Hopefully that’s some insight to why I chose this method. I will also primer and finish the part in Matt black paint, just so again I know what it will look like after casting. I also actually use the black paint to get a particular finish on the master and mist a few layers on, it’s not quite a wet coat, but also not just loose overspray that can be wiped off, kind of in the middle. This builds up a very very slight grain on the surface and gives it a nice uniform finish, which of course will be present on each of the cast parts. Yes I should have listed the parts used. The release agent is brilliant, I use this while making the mould on the first side of the mould while pouring the second side of silicone as it lays on thin so won’t build and cause flashing issues while casting. Also it means I don’t have to brush anything on and accidentally disturb the master. I also use it while casting, again, it doesn’t leave a visible trace on the cast part (unless applied too heavily), so the parts surface finish remains as I intended it to look. It also keeps the mould ‘hydrated?’ and lets me get a fair few more parts cast before it’s burnt out compared to not using any. The spray for anyone reading or who missed it in the video is Mann Ease Release 200, and I believe it’s a Smooth-on product. The resin I used in this video is called Xencast P2 polyurethane casting resin from a company called Easy Composites which I’ve added black pigment to. For this particular part it’s perfect, quick demould times and the strength properties are enough for this part, as it’s a kit that is meant to be cut down and fabricated into a vehicle interior trim. For my other products/ parts I’ll use the same resin, but add around 10% - 15% milled carbon fibre powder for better structural properties. The silicone is from a friends company called DWR plastics and I’ll be honest I cannot remember much regarding the details, as I’ve been having the same product from him for many years so I don’t even get bottles with labels anymore haha. If I find out I’ll be sure to update this comment. The model board was also from Easy Composites, the PU600 high density polyurethane model board. I think that covers everything. Thanks for taking the time to write out your comment and thanks again for watching. Reece

@@RTAFabrication Thank you so much for this detailed response - it is very valuable, there are so few resources for people trying to cast using polyurethane resins, especially with CNC mold machining. I'm mostly following the advice from the fantastic "Guerrilla guide to CNC and resin casting" by Michal Zalewski, but since he moved to the US, his advice on materials is mostly US-based and inapplicable in Europe. Your explanation makes perfect sense. I am not making parts where surface finish is critical, so I never thought about hand-finishing the parts before molding. That Xencast P2 is a fast-casting resin with a brutally short pot life! I'm even more impressed now. I'm looking at resins with a 15-30 minute work life. Anyway, thanks for sharing all the information. I wish there was a forum specifically for people doing precision casting from CNCd molds using PU resins. The forums I've found so far were mostly about pouring epoxy on top of things (river tables, coasters, trays, ashtrays), which is entirely different. I'll be waiting for your future videos :-)

The best silicon mold releasing agent I have found is good, old fashioned, pine sawdust. Rub it on real good and blow it off with your compressor. Much cheaper and very effective.

@@jrychter7 To add a recommendation, Robert Tolone is a mold maker with a lot of experience and with compact and informative videos, I always save that for a time when I can give it the attention it deserves. Also Rybonator makes dice making videos but some of his videos are really general required knowledge or research (he has one on the setup you need for resin casting and it's reasons) and a lot of the techniques he applies are useful for other applications of the craft, hope it helped someone!

@@jrychter7 There are quite a few vids on casting from 3d-printed molds you might find interesting, i don't remember seeing any that were PU resin specific, though i may have just missed that because it was the process i was interested in rather than the casting material.

We use tooling board to make master shapes (additional 3D printed detail parts glued on) for making silicone masters and then resin castings. Having worked w tooling board for many years before we got a CNC, we “splurged” and built a full “negative air” enclosure for the CNC w 4 side access for cleaning. For those not familiar w it, tooling board dust can be very nasty stuff. Nice vid, way more relaxing than our shop environment ;-)

7:46 - Use Methylated spirits to remove hotglue. Spray it on, just enough to wet it. Try and let it draw into the contact surface. The hotglue will harden and detatch and can be removed much more easilly. Thanks for the good work.

Man you had me captivated the entire video. I have no idea what you made but the cinematography was excellent!

Thanks Reese and thanks for watching, I’m glad you enjoyed it. The product is a diy kit to mount an air suspension controller in a vehicle’s interior. The kit is trimmed down and fabricated into an OEM vehicle trim, bodyworked the painted. The first video on my channel shows me using an only version of this kit and doing exactly that if you’re interested. Thanks again for watching!

Nice job mate! I tend to throw thread along the seams that I glue for the mold frame, that way I've got an instant pull and break quick release of the corners. Great job!

I have no idea what that product is used for but that video was beautiful and you're clearly very skilled and patient

Thank you Brandon! The parts is a DIY mount that I make to hold an air suspension controller in a vehicle interior. The kit is designed to be cut down and fabricated into a vehicle interior trim, bodyworked then painted to look like it’s a trim that came factory fitted. The lines on the back are cut lines that you can score with a blade then snap to get down to size quickly and accurately as they’re offset 5mm from one another. The first video I uploaded to my channel demonstrates the process of how I’d use one of these kits (an older version) and fabricate it into an interior trim. Thanks for watching!
