Making a Razor Utility Knife

In this video I will be metal casting a bronze utility knife that uses razor blades. I started by coming up with a design and 3d modeling it in fusion 360. Then I 3d printed patterns to use to make a sand mold. Once cast in bronze I refined the casting with hand files. Then I drilled and tapped holes for stainless steel screws that hold the razor blade in place.

The way you ground those screws the the proper length was really smart

I agree. Although it’s not really about getting the length right, it’s much more about holding the screws.

Very nice job. Maybe you can drill a hole in the top rear edge of the handle to hold the hex wrench you use to loosen/tighten the blade. The hole can have a small piece of rubber tubing inserted to grip the wrench.🤔🤷‍♂️

Yeah this is very cool but missed the opportunity to include the allen wrench and a spare blade or two nested in the handle

it's so simple and elegant and looks amazing! I wasn't sure how you were going to affix the blade to the handle, and I never would have thought of just two simple screws. I was thinking you were gonna have a separate bronze piece that snapped over the blade and into the holes - this way the blade wouldn't be exposed, but i REALLY like your way so much better than what I was imagining!!! - I have a nearly full, extra large coffee can filled with razor blades but no knife to use them in. And that's because they aren't trapezoid shaped like pretty much EVERY razor blade on Earth - They are rectangles lol .... My pops said his sister gave them to him because whoever she got them from couldn't use them because they're rectangle. And this was about 50 years ago ... and we have used them any time we need a small handheld blade, but the can is STILL nearly full LOL - I figured I would make a handle if I ever got a 3D printer, but I still don't have one.. But now I HAVE TO get to melting because I NEED to make this my first project!!! lol THANK YOU FOR THE IDEAS!!!

Looks pretty good. I like that you attach it with screws because every utility knife I have the blades are loose and rattle.

One thing I like to have is a steel honing rod on the back of my utility knife. I love my Milwaukee Fastback, and I took a diamond sharpening steel and used it to roughly polish the steel back of the casting that holds the blade. I can quickly draw the blade across it a few times to hone it when it starts getting dull, and get 2-3x usage out of the blade. I would like a folding knife that exposed the whole of the blade like yours does. I'd suggest adding a flexible 'clip' to one side of the blade guard so that it clips onto the back of the knife, and also add a slot on the blade guard to store a small allen key.

As someone who uses utility knives a fair bit - two fiddly screws for a blade change would drive me insane. The cutter is gorgeous - but it would drive me nuts to try and live with. The magic of those blades is that they’re SO sharp, and so cheap that you can always have a sharp blade. I think you’ll get a bunch more satisfaction from an amazing tool if you can work out a quicker blade change system for the next version.

I was thinking the same about changing the blades quickly. I had a ittke Gerber utility knife (I think it's called fhe EAB or something like that) and while it was a nice utility knife, you had to unscrew one screw to change the blade. That was the only thing I didn't like about it but it was a nice piece to have. It was small and folded. I ended up losing it on a jobsite unfortunately but I bought the Gerber prybird which is a sliding utility knife and has a way to quick change the blade. I'm enjoying it more than the little EAB just for that reason!

Next time you should try power tapping! It's really easy, you just set your spindle to it's slowest setting, put the tap in a collet, make sure the quill stop is all the way down out of the way, turn on the spindle and let the tap tap it's way into the hole all in one go, just use lots of tapping oil and let the spindle come to a complete stop before reversing the spindle direction and you should be fine.

I wonder if the knife design itself could incorporate a way to store the blade guard while in use? Perhaps a minimalist blade guard could be printed with a geometry to secure itself to the end of the handle or snap into the largest frame hole, so it is either unobtrusive or serves to benefit the grip rather than get into the way as an afterthought.

Nice job as always, there is something mesmerising about casting metals, I can't stop watching. I have experimented a bit with 3d printed stencils/masks and a sand blaster, I managed to add frosty writings or graphics to a wine bottle, I think some metal items you make would look really nice partially polished and partially blasted.
