Making our tableware is a little bit different than the rest of our pieces because it is solid cast. That means that rather than dumping out the excess slip to make a hollow form we want to pack all of the slip within the mold so that it comes out completely solid. In our solid cast molds the spout hole should be as small as possible so it isn't a blemish in the form later on, so we have to use a funnel to get all of the slip inside. There is an excess drain hole so that air doesn't get trapped in the mold, and once that begins to leak Tyler will plug it with some perfectly gooey slip.
Once the plates are dry enough to pull from the mold Tyler uses the keyholes as a well for slip so that he can patch the small areas where the drains were. We want these to be perfect! ⠀
After they are all tidied up and a little more dry, Tyler will use compressed air and a ware board to flip them from the mold. It's important to not pick them up by hand at this stage to save them from warping! 👌
