my son made a steam(air ) engine for a science project. getting the valve timing was tricky. a great uncle explained supplying more volume(bigger line) of steam would help. in the end to display it at the science fair it would have to be run in an explosion proof box . so a video tape was used at the fair
@erniew58055 жыл бұрын
@Ethan Stam it is possible the vhs tape is somewhere but i wouldn't know where to start to look and don't have a VHS player anymore. the piston was a copper pipe cap so the cylinder may have been copper pipe also. i would guess he found the plans on line. i recall it showed to use a tin can to generate steam . i nixed that idea . had a 5 gal. pressure cooker but i think those are limited to about 15 psi which wouldn't run it. air pressure would run it but i think you had to use your finger to get it started

For those of you who are smug about operating this engine on air, In the Navy, in port, we would use compressed air to operate bilge pumps, feed pumps and eductors- it is a legitimate motive force and the main benefit of the piston driven steam engine is that it indeed can be used with both sources very effectively. So now you know.

There was no demand anyway as metalurgy still had to catch up to create the high carbon steels that required this process. Even as recently as the 1920s ships of the stature of the Titanic were built with relatively crude and impure steel. Real progress was made by the 1940s to create high speed engine parts for the war effort.

Additionally we have the East Lancashire Railway between Bury and Rawtenstall that runs live steam every weekend of the year. I absolutely love the smell of live steam and the sulphurous smoke clouds from the chimney stacks. The hissing of the steam and the clanging of the massive wheels is pure drama. Hi there, thanks for the nice video, i am trying to build one, but i have one small problem. can i perhaps have a nice picture of the small piston, i cant see if the grove on the side goes trough to the hole that is drilled trough.
@kallewirsch22634 жыл бұрын
No, it doesn't. The operating principle is the following. Lets start with the main piston in its Upper Dead Point (UDP) state and lets call this 0° (and lets assume the engine is already running). The valve piston is in its 270° state. Due to the fly wheel the piston continues its motion and starts to move into its 90° position. The valve piston moves from 270° to 0° and the through whole starts to line up with the hole to the piston (and the hose). Steam (or in his case compressed air) beginns to enter to the main piston and pushes on the piston. The power stroke has begun. WHen the main piston reaches its 90° position, the valve piston has reached its 0° position and the through hole lines up perfectly with the hole to the main piston and the hose. As the main piston continues to turn from 90° to 180° (that is the lower dead point - LDP), the valve piston has gone through its UDP and the through hole begins to misalign with the hose and the boring to the main piston and thus steam flow begins to reduce. Somwhere in between this quarter turn, the through hole no longer connects the main piston with the steam but (after a short time without any connection to the outside world) the grove begins to align with the boring. As the main piston makes its turn around the LDP and continues to 270° the grove is fully aligned with the boring and the steam from inside the cylinder can escape through the boring and the grove as the main piston makes its way back to the UDP: When the main piston reaches its 270° position, the valve piston is at 180° and the grove still gives way to the outside world. But since the valve piston has reached its 180° position it now begins to go back and eventually the grove will no longer align with the boring to the main cylinder. A short time after the main cylinder has reached its 0° position, the grove in the valve cylinder is completely misaligned with the boring and the venting of the main cylinder is stopped. The flywheel takes over and with its inertia it will force the main piston to continue its movement (and with it the valve cylinder). This continues until the through hole in the valve piston begins to line up again with the boring to the main cylinder and the next power stroke begins. You may want to rewatch the video beginning with 09:51. Stop the video and watch it frame by frame (using the ',' and '.' keys on your keyboard) and think about what the position of the valve piston is and which parts of it now line up with the boring which connects the valve cylinder with the main cylinder. Once you understand it, it is really a simple process. The main points are: * you want the through hole to start giving way to the steam as soon as the main piston has gone through its UDP (0°). If the valve opens this way to early, the steam actually will counteract the movement of the main piston. * you want the through hole to close shortly before the main piston reaches LDP (180°) . The closer you get to this requirement the more energy you can use from the steam. But don't overdue it! * you want the grove to connect the main cylinder with the outside world shortly after the main cylinder has passed its LDP (180°) . * and you want the grove to misalign with the boring and thus close this path shortly before the piston reaches its UDP (0°) again. * you want to dimension the through hole and the distance to the beginning of the grove in such a way, that they do not align with the boring to the main cylinder at the same time at some position. Or otherwise the steam would just enter through the through hole and exit immediately through the grove without having done some work on the piston.

Now make a small boiler to supply steam for the engine, this is very easy to do using a 1" threaded pipe and two caps, I'd avoid solder as it will get weak. Easily run on steam. In fact, it would likely work even better on steams since most of the time you're running steam with oil thus have steam oil which lubricates everything with a sheen of oil preventing wear and tear.
