One big concept that you missed is that steam locomotive pistons are double acting, meaning that the pistons are powered on the forward and backward stroke. Since cylinders have no torque at TDC and BDC, the cylinders are staggered 90 degrees from each other as opposed to 180 degrees, allowing for one power stroke every 90 degree rotation. This is the reason a locomotive chuffs 4 times for every wheel rotation on a 2-cylinder engine.
@frostedwheatly38794 күн бұрын
I do think the lack of double action pistons are the biggest issue I see. Especially when he was showing off the increased load on the engine: having more power on each 90° turn would let it pull more as well as run smoother.

I think a lot of what is actually moving the engine is the recoil of the water cannons acting on the frame rather than them actually spinning the wheels (seen especially at 10:46 where the wheels should have spun counter clockwise moving the engine left but it kept moving right, and the friction on the rails turned the wheels in the correct direction against the piston) you could remedy this by making the pistons double acting like on an actual steam engine, as it would cancel out the forces from the water cannons and only be coming from the wheels

I love that there's trains in Besiege now, and i just have a few tips for you if you come back to this idea. Try linking the four small wheels at the front (the pilot wheels) to a subframe that has some lateral movement along the tracks, and so that they can start to turn before the main driving wheels start to turn. Also, try removing the thin, biggest wheel in the center of the driving trio. That's your equivalent of a flange, and on lots of model trains and some real ones the center drive wheels would be "blind" (no flange) so that they still provide adhesion to the rail on the straights, but on turns they just float. Kind of like semi truck trailers. One last thing, steam locomotive pistons are offset by 90° instead of 180°. That way no matter how you stop you wouldn't end up with one piston at full extention and one at full retraction, thus with no way to inject steam into the other side of the cylinders and move the pistons. Until next time.
@DrRussian18 күн бұрын
I dont quite think 90° would work in besiege without a 4 stroke system. Otherwise you'd end up with 1/4 rotation without power.
@REEbott8612 күн бұрын
Offsetting pistons by 90 degrees was more to do with putting down more torque and is a big part of what gave steam trains their ability to seemingly pull any load with enough time. There were many simpler fixes to pistons getting stuck at full extension which were used on steam engines, just not on trains.
@levibruner755318 күн бұрын
My man reinvented the wheels, couplers, valve gear, and steam engine all in one video. And he pretty much ended up right where we are. The wheels especially, they are literally built how they have been for the last 200 years: Conical and flanged.

Key things about trains 1) low angle tapered wheels are necessary for good travelling. 2) offset the pistons at 90° so that there is never a time that both pistons are at max travel. (unable to push past 'neutral') 3) larger drive wheels give more speed, smaller drive wheels give more tork Hope this helps if you ever come back to this.
@johnm92636 күн бұрын
steam pistons attach at a 90 degree offset on either side to the driven wheelset this is because they provide a push on BOTH sides of the stroke, forward and back this means you get 4 pushes per rotation, this gives you a lot more "oompf" to move rolling stock (the train cars) in almost all cases, a steam engine has more pushing/pulling power than an electrically driven one (including diesels and diesel-mechanic ones), but it only gives you more power when its actually able to get all 4 cycles to go off in a set amount of time, which is why we just use more diesels, because they can just slug it out at really low speeds
@trustyoldiron54163 күн бұрын
I'd love to see another episode of this. I'd stagger the crank pins on the wheels at 90 degrees and make the "pistons" double acting (Push and pull) That way every 1/4 turn of the wheels is a power stroke. Double your power and run much smoother.

It’s a lot better if you offset the pistons by 90 degrees rather than 180, at 180 both pistons get stuck in the center of the wheel where they can’t push or pull so you get a lot of binding, but at 90 degrees when one piston is at the center the other will be in the top or bottom of the wheel so it’ll be able to turn the wheel to a point where the other can start working again

The wobble from the steam cannon recoil is actually something in real engines, they do a "dance" because of the inertia of the pistons and rods. It's a lot more pronounced on engines with no leading or trailing trucks, such as 0-6-0s.
@REEbott8612 күн бұрын
That may be true but the steam cannons inertia is sometimes actually cancelling out the pistons and wheels on his build, the inertia of a piston on an engine that weighs tons isn’t exactly doing that😂

8:29 these are called flanges. All real trains have them, and they help keep the wheels on the rails, especially if the tapered/conical wheels don't get the job done completely. If the wheels aren't tapered, you at least need flanges.
@Wreckedftfoxy18 күн бұрын
13:45 this is a scrap mechanic thing, since rails exist but flanges suck they just use guide wheels, btw if ur not taking a switch track use both of them on one side and replace all of them to those guide wheels it will wont bind as much also that is using cannon propulsion its not a steam engine its a steam thruster
