Wonderful series. The emotions I am feeling reminds me of the final days of classes before graduating with my BSEE. Lots of late night studying and cramming for exams then the feeling of accomplishment knowing the end is near, then the sadness saying good by to the many friends made and not knowing what the future brings. Thanks for sharing and looking forward to the next build series.

Beautiful build and absolutely amazing job creating, filming and editing this series. I can’t imagine the time it took took to complete the series. Thank you for sharing your talents with us. One odd question… Why not fill the holes left by the staples? I understand it’s another step in the process but I feel like it would make for a cleaner finished product. Maybe it’s not as noticeable in person 🤷🏼‍♂️.

Once again thanks so much for all the effort you put into this series Nick. I can't imagine all the work that went into getting all the camera angles used on this video. This series really filled in a lot of subtle details that go into a kayak build, and allayed my fear of the hull/deck joint taping. Unfortunately my hopes of building a strip Petrel Play this summer just didn't pan out, but it remains my choice once I get time and funds in order to build a kayak. The ease with which you can handle a 31 pound kayak really shines through in this video. I'm hoping that you get a chance to build one of these for yourself, or perhaps having your original Petrel and the stitch & glue Petrel Play version has you covered off. I'll be thrilled to follow along with whatever you choose to build. Anyway, thank you for sharing your experience and passion.

Great boat-and handy. Your video should be supreme motivation for the maker-types, and quite clearly shows the hours you put into your gorgeous and functional product. Fine bidness! The cover on/off the canoe caught my eye--yeah I know not everything is shown in the sequence it was shot. Film-101.

If I started worrying about continuity errors, I would get nothing done. I'm using 3 different paddles, and there are several different seasons shown.

Not your first attempt in or out of a kayak. And that paddle flip at the end. Oh my. Looks like the marshes here in South Louisiana. Except I can't quiet get to them by walking out my back door. Do kayak video on the scenery where you live. And maybe a hubrid ply hull/strip deck build. Thanks Nick.

Do you perhaps have a video discussing canoes vs two-person kayaks? I am not a terribly avid boater, but my 35 year old 17’ Grumman gets heavier every year. The building process looks intriguing, but I would want a two-person kayak if I went that direction or a canoe. I have read some of the pros and cons in general, but wonder if you have discussed this in the context of wood strip designs. In particular the degree of build difficulty of canoe vs two-person kayak, weight and stability differences, etc.

A tandem canoe or kayak is a great way for two people to get out on the water together. This works well so long as both want to do exactly the same thing. Tandems are also sometimes called "divorce boats" because one person wants to go to the left, the other to the right and disagreements can arise. Solo boats are lighter and easier to handle so you don't need as much help to get on to the water. Each paddler can do their own thing. The downside is if one paddler is a lot faster/slower than the other it can also lead to disagreements.

ok, ya talked me into it. i have watched the complete series on the build at least 3 times, ordered plans for this boat from you last week, i am thinking it will be a good winter project, hope to be able to launch it next year, if i may ask, what would be a reasonable guess on hours to complete? i have built a stitch and glue clc 18, its a freight hauler for sure. i want a smaller boat to put on top of my tiny camper to be able to use , mount and carry to the water all by my self, thanks for the videos and inspiration, machinist /tool and die maker by trade, and its true machinist are the worst carpenters, to fussy. be safe

You need to look into magnetized hatch covers.

I have done the magnetic hatch covers. While they work, I am not sold on the system. The magnets corrode very easily, and while sealing them from saltwater would seem to be easy, it is not as straightforward as you would imagine.

@@hermannfernandespais7317 Interestingly, I made my first kayaks more quickly than I do now. I spend more time on the details when I build for a customer. If I were building for myself, I would take half the time.

I bought your plans for the Guillemot Expedition over 10 years ago and I never got around to building it. I've built many other things in the mean time but watching this whole series has definitely put a bug in me to give it a go. Now I just have to find a build space for it....or buy a house with a garage :-D Curious how long does it take YOU to build a kayak like this?

I'm not gonna lie--after three years of on-again-off-again work on my Great Auk, I'm terrified that I'm going to plop it in the water expecting it to look like yours, but instead it'll just sink to the bottom immediately. Fingers crossed that doesn't happen :D

How would you like to use the kayak you build?

Nick Schade I would likely use it in flat water in most situations. I currently paddle in the Tennessee river. I want to use it for exercise and fun. I have never used a kayak for a long distance paddle but if the chance presented it self I would. And i would for sure return to open water if I move back to a coastal state...lol a little bit of everything I guess. Thank you for the reply!!

I would suggest the microBootlegger Sport over the Petrel Play. They would both work very well, but the µBS is a bit faster for fitness paddling, slightly more stable. I don't think you would be disappointed with either one, but if you are looking for a reason to pick one over the other, there you go.
