I've got a 36 gallon bowfront aquarium I set up a month ago. It has a filter for a 50 g tank and now I have diatoms bad and also I'm getting blue algea. I'm so frustrated that I'm already ready to quit. Any advice you can give me? I also have high alkalinity about 300 straight out of the tap water.

My Betta loves swimming in and out of his dense vegetation. Plus he often rests in the plants. A Betta must be really stressed out when he cannot do that and is on display all the time. Sure, sometimes I don't see him at all, but that's ok. I still see him several times a day. Sometimes he lies on a plant and peeks out at me, and all I see is his grumpy face, so cute! Not giving a Bettafish any plants is just egotism. Give them space and vegetation (mine has 70 litres) and they can even live with the right tankmates. Mine lives peacefully with Blue Jelly shrimp, 6 Otocinclus and snails. If you need "stylish" in your home, buy a painting 😊.
@JvWet
@JvWet Жыл бұрын
I understand why MD did it this way but for me this is too much a display scape, animals are not (should not be treated as) things that are placed on display. They need shelter / relaxation places (vegetation) within a tank as you pointed out.
@nehireotarulkka8092
@nehireotarulkka8092 Жыл бұрын
I don't hate the tank, just the fish he chose. Betta and Neon Tetras love hiding in plants. Guppies or Platies would have been a better choice. They love their free water swimming space, are not timid at all, are content sleeping on the ground and only need plants when they are very young. Still, I would like the aquarium even better with one large, bright green plant in the back right corner. Echinodorus or one of the larger Anubias would be perfection. Still not overgrown, still stylish, but way more interesting and a better habitat.

It's so strange, I dont have a fishtank, will never have a fishtank but I have watched almost every video you've put out! I have geckos, spiders and a tortoise but I think it's the plants you have and how you just make them thrive. Your eye for design is flawless but this looks like a display tank. I am fanatical about a tank with nothing but plants, wood, rocks and fish; no visible equipment and no plastic. And I think its best for the fish. A little piece of a lake in your house.

Without Plants that's a hard No-Go. Bettas need Vegetation and Plants. This just stresses the fish needlessly. Plus a short finned betta should really have a longer tank rather than a high one since they're far more active swimmers. I guess it's nice and artsy but don't let fish suffer for it

That still means a few months of animals not feeling comfortable in there. I wish aquascapers would be more aware of their responsibility in the hobby. Lots of people imitate what they see here, and you should not teach them to ignore the specific needs of a fish species and put them into anything just because it's pretty.

If you or anyone watching has never tried it before,, there are certain tanks/set ups that look absolutely amazing with a mirror for your background,, I Also did a cube tank like this one with mirror on all 3 sides,, leaving the front the only clear glass & it looked absolutely insanely good..The important key is to remember while working on it,, that because of the mirror,, you must look at,, treat & set up each side as if that side is the front because no side will be hidden.

That's all I've ever really used was driftwood and rocks, as plants are so expensive, and I rarely could afford them. Other then plastic plants, mine were always just like this. After loosing some beautiful Angelfish, due to them getting hung up in the plastic plants, I've sworn off any plastics. Always hated them anyway, but was more affordable is all. Anyhow, I'm liking this tank, but really love the usual you do, MD. But it doesn't hurt to have something different in the studio, right? And there is beauty in this build, it's just different. Just dropping in the comments to say that your channel came recommended by a fellow comrade. I enjoy your videos, I think the way you have fun in an unsystematic way is educational and entertaining. I don't even care to check out other channels/content creators. I think it's a combination of your genuine passion (not letting monetization make you become dispassionate) your voice is very soothing which vibes really well with the content you publish. There's an overall vibe and feel about you that's very welcoming, and your humble disclaimer tangents really make you come across as someone who, despite your wealth of knowledge, demonstrate to the community that no matter how experienced or knowledgeable you might be, there's always much to learn. I used to have a 20 gallon Angel fish aquarium as a child. And now I want to get into it again. I'm watching all your videos before I start planning out my tank. Thanks to you, I've considered buying second hand 55-100gallon tank that i will be able to re-silicone, I'll be aiming for an angel fish South American tank. Maybe considering something like your blackwater tank. And I'll build a wall mounted floating cat-proof shelf.

Saying he's educational and that you won't bother even watching other creators is extremely ignorant lmao. MD seems to care less and less about the actual life of the fish, otherwise there'd be plants in this tank. You can tell when he's making tanks with Matt he doesn't actually know much of what he's talking about and loves to overstock his tanks. He sold out A LONG time ago

@@oftheHowl yes he’s a great aquascaper but not a great fish keeper. Totally agree about the overstocking bit and some people watching will think they can do the same thing.

I think there are some valid arguments you make, but given my ADHD, I have a hard time following many of these kinds of videos. I actually have tried to follow other channels, and I just disassociate right away. While I find how MD communicates to be more able to keep my attention. I do agree that he doesn't go into enough detail about fish themselves, and well I don't expect him to be a biologist, he could probably spend a bit more time providing well researched explanations how certain scapes benefit specific fish instead of reiterating every video how to drop the 5mm rocks for a natural tumble look. Take my comment with a grain of salt, as I'm exagerating for effect. Obviously when it comes to more specific things I will do more research beyond this channel, but more text based research instead of youtube channels. So I don't think it's fair to call me ignorant since I've been reading various blogs, articles. I'm not limiting my entire research on MD Fish Tanks, just as far as the KZbin content goes it seems that his channel is the one that is capable of retaining my attention strictly because of his style of delivery.

Great hardscape! How did you remove the tannins from the wood? How is your water so bright and clear?

You should try some rare or odd plants in one of these like an alien planet tank. Maybe like white anubius and others

You're really good at doing planted tanks but you're even better at laying out hardscapes
