"Less is more" - you may not have gotten everything you 'wanted' in the scene but it was sharp, well put together. You mention trying to show the armour protecting the enemy fighting 3 times rather than just the once, but this was showcased very well with just the one instance. Anyway, bloody well done mate!

Shads goofy walk and his nose poking out is hilarious lmao
@temptempy1360Ай бұрын
yes, it's fun to walk in hot sweaty armour, up and down the hill all day - but trying to "sell the cool" when moving about with nothing to do or say, and no real prop or action to achieve is _way_ harder than it looks. That's why there are usually other people in frame or moving objects, because not merely "walking well" but "being seen as walking well" is a couple levels of difficulty harder. The nose was classic too - since I know a re-enactor from way back who likewise was generously endowed in the proboscis and used to have issues with his helmet. (the helmet if it sat wrong would push up against his nose, could twist his nose sideways if he had a moderate fall, and he couldn't fit anyone else's helmet).

This BTS combined with watching the 2 different endings was a fun enriching experience. Felt like watching live action comic book scenes. The strong sunlight and yellowish grass seem to make the colour grading more challenging to get the medieval Europe feel. The pauldron colours looked awesome btw. I'm impressed that y'all did this in such a short time. I'd swap this out for so many lousy overworked fight scenes in movies today. It takes some talent to make a scene come out that isn't just technically correct, but deeply emotional. Well done. I had a construction and remodeling company. I was the contractor who always took the projects that other contractors were scared of. Ones requiring really out of the box thinking. It made the hard dirty work fulfilling.

The waterside was an excellent choice. Yes, on-location takes so much longer - you can see how having veteran crew makes such a huge difference - this artifact has many mysterious moving pieces. Any one failure can hold or destroy the rest. What can be a trip up, is if you get set for that morning shoot - then have to match with afternoon footage, or fill shots. The whole lighting angles and shadows change hugely - sometimes better to split the day, just so you don't have to deal with nature's 12kW spotlight change colour and angle. The video [engineer] processing to match such runs to match colour and lighting is well established but not cheap or easy, and still go so wrong. This was a constant challenge on LoTR, shooting in am, continuing/fills in pm, and because of the delays you mentioned - trying to get a lighting match while shooting during night-time with enough candlepower to try an match morning sun. Loving the "making" of. Certainly excellent portfolio piece - still surprised about no glove/gauntlets. Real(tm) movie and TV are commonly done with the talents faces visible unless the choreography explicitly calls for it, so that's not so much of a surprise from a stunt/movie prospective.

@JatheusАй бұрын
Videographer here! Please leave this video public. I know you were speaking in generalities, but every bit of advice you offered on film making is rock solid. I would add two things... 1. The 180* line: What you said about it is accurate and highly important. I would add that if someone has a need to cross the line, it can be done so long as it is done within a single shot (not a cut). So, if you have the actors move in a wide shot so that now the camera is on the other side, that works fine. But if you do that, stay on that side. Crossing back and forth is super confusing, as you said. It just has to be done with care and intent for a storytelling reason. 2. Separation/readability: You did two things that demonstrated this, but you didn't talk about it. You wore red and black against a green background, which visually makes the actors and action easy to read, and you were also backlit, using the sun to put rim light on your outline. Both of those things separated you from the background making you easy to follow. Like I said, all of your advice is rock solid, and thank you for what you do!

"It doesn't cut through the armor, that's a cool moment" I agree 100%. But also, the moment of the cross guard clash (if it's called that) you and Shad are pushing and trying to capitalize. @@ScreenTested if you do it again - lots of sun-block, large hats or head drapery to stop the sun burn*, and consider a spray bottle with lots of water. Also check out cooling gel towels/sheets from your local hardware or safety shop. Mine are a blue approx A3 cloth, make them wet, then wave them even in warm air and the evaporation makes them ice cold. I usually shove one under my hat, and stick the other down my back/over my back while not watched, just to absorb direct sunlight and be like some removal Battlemech heatsink. * the sunburn isn't just a risk to the health, and danger of heat exhaustion and dehydration; but it can be hard to match and edit shots if the Faces and other fleshy parts shown change colour during the day - particularly for white folk and doing Fills.

Thanks for the breakdown! it is always cool to see the behind-the-scenes, I would always watch film BTS and documentary's because I had to know all of the details. So having this is a really great resource!! When it comes to slo-mo, I like those shots when they're used in the film's shorthand sense as adrenaline, the moment where the character or the characters have a burst of adrenaline, such as a narrow miss with a blade, a struggle between two magic wielders when their spells reach their upmost, or a gunman sprinting out of cover to place several well aimed shots against the bad guys. That is when that visual is really great! Also, spot on with the color grading! I'm so sick of the modern filming technique of flattening and loosing color. Please give me my magical and fantasy color spectrum back!!!! XD Don't be too hard on yourself! Just keep trying, when and where you can. Any practice can make things better, so long as you try.

An aspect of storytelling that I noticed is the characterization, or lack thereof. I'd like to make it clear that I loved this fight scene, and the environmental storytelling was on point. I just find it disappointing that you have these two knights of differing asthetics, but they dont behave too differently. One moment that stuck out to me was in Shad's video. In the beginning, he prays before the banner, establishing a sense of honor and respect. However at the end of the fight, he's throwing his sword and celebrating his victory in over the top fashion. Overall a fantastic video, as far as i can tell every other element of film making is spot on.

For breaking the 180, if the two fighters swap places, can the camera change positions to keep them on the same side of the screen, or would it need to be a dynamic movement to avoid confusion? Or should them swapping spots just be avoided when possible? (Of course you *can* do anything, I just mean, what do you think is the best advice for noobs?)

When it comes to Action Cinema I always say you can't go wrong with going back to the roots. And what is the root of modern action, Akira Kurosawa's legendary film Seven Samurai. Highly recommend checking it out if you never have. From it's pacing in the fight scenes, shot composition, fast paced but clear editing, and it's limited but powerful use of slow motion. The film is a masterpiece of Action Cinema despite not truly being what we would consider now as an Action film.
