Nicely built! I have to do something like this but I think I will transplant the moving jaw from my factory made wrench instead of using that rod with a V groove. Then I get a groove that goes all the way to the face so it can grip even the smallest taps.

I made a copy of the small Starrett tap wrench in the early 90s. My coworker had a Starrett so I was able to get dimensions from it.

Ah that’s very cool, I haven’t actually held one since I made the one in the video so not sure how close it is, but it would be really handy to have one as a guide!

@@nomadhandcrafted if it works for you it's good enough. It's better than most of the tap wrenches out there for sale. Many have such rough knurling and small diameter handles that they can make your hands sore from using them. They often have coarse threads that back off and let the tap get loose.

Most definitely, the ones I have owned before are all cheap and do exactly the things you describe, it’s not perfect, but a big step up from what I’m used to 😂

Starrett has dimensioned drawings on their website for these that will give you all the external dimensions you would need for most of it. I made an A sized one and plan on making a larger one someday.

Thanks man, my lathe is a hafco al-320g I don’t have the specs on hand, but I’m pretty sure it’s a 320mm swing and 600mm turning capacity with a 38mm spindle bore. I think there is a similar machine available in your part of the world, but not sure how it’s branded etc. but thanks for checking it out!

I think I'd have made it with a knurled, larger diameter, opposite end to the handle, so it's symmetrical.

That’s fair, I probably would have knurled a little section if I could have figured out how to do it on the taper with some sort of consistency, but the taper was a design element I really wanted as I love that it gives a positive grip towards the centre of the tool, and also was a bit of a challenge for me to figure out how to plan out all the processes in order. Nice work. I destroyed my cheap tap wrench tapping an M12 hole in stainless steel. I was disappointed at the paucity of quality tap wrenches available in Oz. I ended up buying the Goliath brand model from Sydney Tools. It’s a lot better than the garden variety wrench, but nowhere near Starrett quality. No doubt it’s inferior to yours too.

I’ve been in the same boat! The jump from cheap crap ones to really good ones is massive. And it’s hard to afford all of the nicest tools 😂 that Goliath design does look pretty good though, and I notice they make it for a lot bigger taps as well which could be nice.
