Making a steel rule clicker die for cutting out repeatable leather shapes...made using fairly basic tools. This tool is bending 2pt die, it will not manage thicker dies.
My website is: www.bucklehurstleather.co.uk
Here is a link for the bending tool:
www.durston.co.uk/lan-multi/pr...
and here is a link for a steel rule supplier in the UK:

For anyone attempting this, simply tape your pattern to the steel with masking tape and continue to tape it as you complete each bend, to achieve precise bends.

You can draw a pattern line on a board, that way you can see overbends and the paper doesn't get overused. A collection of pattern lines can be drawn on one board for later use.

More expensive and more effort , but longer life glue print to hard ply wood . Saw along line with scroll saw . Plywood thickness to accomodate steel and ejector pad if used . Holes can be drilled in plywood for small cutters for holes or special shapes . plywood holds die in place, and is bolted to steel backing plate . I serviced presses for company that did not quote orders less than ten thousand units . Their bender was same basic design ,larger and more tooling .There are many small small cutters available for holes etc , sorry i don't have vendor info . A little practice you will be pleased with your results .

If I can offer a couple of bits of advice Harry. I don't use the backing plywood. I'm only using a 1 ton arbor press and I find the ram needs very little pressure when used on the steel rule itself. I don't have the movable base that you have so I have to move the die and the leather which is not ideal but deouble sided tape stops the leather from moving about. Regarding the bottom of your bag, Have you considered inverting it? It would be much easier to sew and would leave a stiff lip for the bag to sit on thus protecting the bottom of it. Good job on the video. Keep up the good work. Paul

All well and good making it yourself and good on you for going to all this effort but for the price of purchasing all the tools and metal and spending all that time making the cutting die, it would be far cheaper to get on the the leather cutting die makers from AlliExpress to custom make them for you using their die making machines which are computerised. It's a lot cheaper than you think.

Harry, I am starting to play around with die making for leather as well. The method I am starting with is to cut the wood template (undersized by two rule thicknesses) and then wrap the rule around it by anchoring the wood template to the bench and using leverage to pull the rule hard/tight against the template. Have you tried this method? any suggestions?

in case someone was reading this and wondered how it turned out for me, bought one of the alibaba ones, it was able to bend the rule but got a bit stuck (probably needed lubrication) and the handle part that you turn got very easily broken (it's a metal pole into a threaded socket, and the pole got dethreaded). still works. that said, i found for making small shapes that have multiple bends to be either very difficult or impossible (if your rule is a small shape that comes back around, it gets in the way of the bender itself.. like imagine getting inside a small square with a big rig bending machine). so long story short, it didn't work for my needs (cutting stickers), i think it would work if it's easy shapes like squares but any type of intricate die cutting seems too hard to do accurately, and/or impossible without cutting the die into different bits then soldering them together again. but yeah happy to have tried and happy for the video!

General name is called “Steel Rule Die.” The host uses that name about 25% in to video. Used to cut other materials as well as leather. Die cutters are not generally called “clicker” either-that appears to be a name that is commonly used in leather craft, but not generally in die cutting industry. Might be a brand name that was generalized.
